Back in 2014, prompted by all the festival buzz I had been hearing – as well as my eternal love for the guys from Flight of the Conchords – I posted a trailer for a small budget New Zealand comedy about vampires by little known writer/director Taika Waititi called What We Do In the Shadows. I can almost guarantee that most of you have never seen it. I can also guarantee that those of us who have will tell you that you missed out on one of the most hilarious films of 2015!

So now, I’m giving you a chance to correct your mistakes – to come in on the ground level so to speak – as Waititi is back with another small budget New Zealand comedy and once again this one is lighting up the Festival scene where it’s just debuted. It’s called Hunt For the Wilderpeople and may not boast Jermaine Clement as a sucky vampire or Rhys Darby as a werewolf (not a swear wolf), but it is seemingly drawing nothing but praise and massive laughs from anybody that’s seen it.

A first teaser trailer has just been released, and admittedly it doesn’t show much beside for giving you a small taste of its dry, oddball sensibilities, but this is definitely one I’ll be keeping an eye on. Check out the trailer below.

Raised on hip-hop and foster care, defiant city kid Ricky gets a fresh start in the New Zealand countryside. He quickly finds himself at home with his new foster family: the loving Aunt Bella, the cantankerous Uncle Hec, and dog Tupac. When a tragedy strikes that threatens to ship Ricky to another home, both he and Hec go on the run in the bush. As a national manhunt ensues, the newly branded outlaws must face their options: go out in a blaze of glory or overcome their differences and survive as a family.

According to sites like /Film who have seen the film, The Hunt for the Wilderpeople is based on Barry Crump’s book Wild Pork and Watercress and plays out like “Tropic Thunder meets Up”, which is a combination of movies that really intrigues me.

There’s no official wide release date set for Wilderpeople yet, but with the buzz it’s getting it’s only a matter of time before some distributor picks it up. In the meantime, Waititi is probably already neck-deep into his next project which you may have heard of before: Marvel’s Thor: Ragnarok. After that Waititi and Clement also need to start writing a werewolf-centric spinoff for What We Do In the Shadows, which just got the most incredibly pun-tastic title.

“It’s going to be called We’re Wolves, like ‘We are wolves.’ We’re Wolves.”

Ah, I love it already!
