The last time Michael Shannon had to deal with somebody with super powers, a whole city was nearly destroyed by dubstep and Batman got pissed off. Luckily, Midnight Special doesn’t feature an alien in a tight blue onesie and a red cape but it certainly doesn’t look any less super.

The upcoming film reteams Shannon with his Take Shelter and Mud writer-director Jeff Nichols and once again it appears to be a potent pairing as Nichols seems to be merging his previous dabblings in both sci-fi and coming of age drama in this tale about a father who has to go on the run from shady G-men when his son starts exhibiting strange super powers.

The first trailer dropped last night and it’s looking damn good with a gritty low-key sci-fi vibe, all bolstered by a stellar support cast including Kirsten Dunst, Joel Edgerton, Adam Driver, and Sam Shepard. Check it out below!

From Mud and Take Shelter writer and director Jeff Nichols, Midnight Special follows a father (Michael Shannon), who goes on the run to protect his young son, Alton (Jaeden Lieberher), and uncover the truth behind the boy’s special powers. What starts as a race from religious extremists and local law enforcement quickly escalates to a nationwide manhunt involving the highest levels of the Federal Government. Ultimately his father risks everything to protect Alton and help fulfill a destiny that could change the world forever in this genre–defying film as supernatural as it is intimately human.

Midnight Special is scheduled for release on March 18, 2016.

  1. “…great performance out of Nicolas Cage in the fantastic Mud…” Say what? I though that was Matthew Mcconaughey?
