If there’s one thing that Battleship proved, it’s that Rihanna can’t act. Oh and that lots of people will go watch a movie based on an old board game, even if it’s only related to its source in the most ephemeral way possible. But if Battleship can pull in $309 million with that tenuous link, then Ouija should be like a baker’s Jack Russell puppy –  just rolling in the dough – as it actually focuses on its titular board game for it’s story.

Said story coming from Stiles White, the same writer/director who along with writing partner Juliette Snowden was behind 2012’s The Possession, which boasted some genuinely creepy and disturbing moments (the trailer alone probably resulted in an upswing of sales on adult diapers), even if the story became too silly to support itself later on.

But with this trailer for Ouija mainly boasting the cliched creaky noises and jump scares that are unfortunately par for the course for these types of horror movies, it looks like like their latest effort may just be a bit of a step backwards.

In theaters this Halloween, “Ouija” follows a group of friends who must confront their most terrifying fears when they awaken the dark powers of an ancient spirit board.

Ouija stars Olivia Cooke, Daren Kagasoff, Douglas Smith, Bianca Santos and Ana Coto. It is scheduled to start haunting your theatres on October 24, 2014.
