If you had hopes that 2015 would finally be the year where we got a good video game movie adaptation, then you may have thought those hopes already shot (by a painfully bland bald guy in a suit). But wait! There’s more! Because out of nowhere comes this trailer for Ratchet & Clank, a CG animated prequel to the immensely popular video game series of the same name. And it looks kind of fun!

With over 10 titles in its library, Ratchet & Clank has been a staple video game on the Playstation platform since 2002 and have almost always garnered positive reviews from its millions of fans. So it wasn’t much of a surprise when a CG animated movie was announced back in 2013. But then we heard absolutely nothing about it and promptly forgot it even existed. But it does!

The film is intended to act as a prequel to the series, showing how the title characters met. In the early games, Ratchet (a feline-like alien character known as a lomax) and Clank (a diminutive, sentient robot) are heroes who travel to all sorts of exotic locations in the universe, mainly to stop the evil Chairman Drek who is busy conquering planets for his evil people, the Blarg, who destroyed their own world’s environment.

The movie sees all the original video game voice actors reprise their roles, but the cast also gets filled out by some A-list Hollywood talent in Paul Giamatti as Chairman Drek,  Sylvester Stallone as Drek’s lieutenant Victor Von Ion, John Goodman as Grimroth the mechanic, and Rosario Dawson as Elaris, one of the peacekeeping Galactic Rangers whose ranks Ratchet hopes to join.

Check out the trailer below.

Ratchet & Clank was directed by Jericca Cleland, who served as cinematographer on both Arthur Christmas and Finding Nemo, and is written by Kevin Munroe, who wrote and directed the awesome 2007 TMNT animated movie. The film is scheduled for release on April 29, 2016.
