The lifecycle of an actor is a very finite, and well known process: You start on either theatre or TV and end your career on a new CSI/NCIS spinoff. But now thanks to Liam Neeson, a new “Badass Old Man” stage has been slotted into that cycle, and based on this trailer for The Gunman, the latest actor to reach this point is Sean Penn.

And the two-time Oscar winner is getting some seasoned help in debuting as a Badass Old Man in the form of Pierre Morel, the director who kicked off this whole craze with Neeson’s brilliantly lean Taken in 2008. Penn is also surrounded by a number of other Badass Old Men in the form of Javier Bardem and Idris Elba. Whether that added help will help Penn to the same level of success as Neeson is still a matter for debate after just watching this preview. All the basic ingredients are there, but there’s nothing that really looks truly impressive. Then again, everybody thought the same thing about Taken‘s first few trailers and look how that turned out.

An adaptation of Jean-Patrick Manchette’s “The Prone Gunman.” Sean Penn stars as Jim Terrier, an international operative who is betrayed by the organization he worked for, and must go on the run in a relentless game of cat and mouse across Europe.

The Gunman is scheduled for release on March 20, 2015.

Sorry about that. It seems that in my haste to fix something else on the post, I accidentally linked the wrong video.
