Tulip Fever header

If sumptuous period pieces with a healthy dash of romance and drama are your cup of tea, then Tulip Fever is one you definitely won’t want to miss.

It’s directed by Justin Chadwick (Mandela: Long Walk to Freedom) with the screenplay by Tom Stoppard (Shakespeare in Love); and is based on the 1999 novel of the same name by author Deborah Moggach, whose novel ‘These Foolish Things’ was adapted for the movie The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel in 2011.

The movie has an excellent cast that’s lead by be-still-my-beating-heart Alicia Vikander, Christoph Waltz and Dane DeHaan; with the supporting cast no slouches either.

The official plot synopsis is as follows:

An artist falls for a young married woman while he’s commissioned to paint her portrait during the tulip mania of 17th century Amsterdam

The story looks to be a familiar one – the innocent young woman trapped in a loveless marriage to an older man falls in love with the handsome young artist – but I’ll be damned if it doesn’t look good (and explains why Nick hates artists). Not only are the visuals impressive, but so too is the cast that you’d be hard-pressed to beat – it’s brimming with many of Hollywood’s top established and up-and-coming actors.

Tulip Fever is due for release in the US on 15 July. In addition to the above-mentioned Vikander, Waltz and DeHaan, it also stars Judi Dench, Tom Hollander, Cara Delevingne, Jack O’Connell and… Zach Galifianakis?! Now I have to see it, and I don’t even like movies like this – what do you think?
