Since going from The Boy Who Lived to The Man Who Has Amazingly Outgrown the Harry Potter Movies, Daniel Radcliffe has made some very interesting and unexpected career choices, starring in a Victorian ghost story, appearing naked on stage in a play about a boy who falls in love with his horse, and making a movie where he gets very horny – literally. But I guess everybody needs a bit of a light palette cleanser every once in a while, and it looks like What If may just be it for the English actor.

While boasting a stellar cast, and seeing Radcliffe sharing the spotlight with the always lovely Zoe Kazan, What If appears to be going through all the rom-com cliches with such reckless abandon that I’m surprised to not see a clumsy Julia Roberts running away from Richard Gere somewhere in the background. There appear to be hints of a deeper movie though, and that combined with the fact that Michael Dowse, the guy who directed the criminally under-watched and just as easily under-estimated Goon, is behind this, fills me with some hope that this is a bit more than just a collection of genre tropes.

“What If” is the story of medical school dropout Wallace (Daniel Radcliffe), who’s been repeatedly burned by bad relationships. So while everyone around him, including his roommate Allan (Adam Driver) seems to be finding the perfect partner (Mackenzie Davis), Wallace decides to put his love life on hold. It is then that he meets Chantry (Zoe Kazan) an animator who lives with her longtime boyfriend Ben (Rafe Spall). Wallace and Chantry form an instant connection, striking up a close friendship. Still, there is no denying the chemistry between them, leading the pair to wonder, what if the love of your life is actually your best friend?

What If also stars Adam Driver, Rafe Spall, Megan Park, Mackenzie Davis, Oona Chaplinand will have a limited release on August 1, 2014.
