Colin Farrell and Russell Crowe have both played a wide variety of characters in a kaleidoscopic assortment of films between them, from walking computer programs to vampires to singing French policemen to futuristic triple-agents to Roman gladiators. But there’s always time to take on something new, which in this case is an adaptation of Mark Helprin’s critically acclaimed novel, Winter’s Tale, which for a long time was considered unfilmable. That “unfilmable” tag being earned through combination of a love story, a crime story oh and the end of the world, people being resurrected, fantastical rainbow bridges and a flying white horse that can travel in time.

Set in a mythic New York City and spanning more than a century, “Winter’s Tale” is a story of miracles, crossed destinies, and the age-old battle between good and evil. Based on the acclaimed novel by Mark Helprin.

Akiva Goldsman will be making his directorial debut with Winter’s Tale, as well as adapting Helprin’s out-there novel. The veteran screenwriter made a name for himself penning A Beautiful Mind (for which he won an Oscar), I Am Legend and A Time to Kill, among others. Goldsman was of course also the man who wrote Lost In Space, The Da Vinci Code and Batman & Robin. So yeah, while I do like what I see from the trailer above, and am a fan of both Farrell and Crowe’s work, this could go either way.

Winter’s Tale will be flying a horse into cinemas on February 14, 2014.

  1. This actually looks good. Really good. Despite Akiva Goldsman
