Studio Ghibli animation legend Hayao Miyazaki has flirted with retirement several times in the past – he’s even cheated on it! – but this latest vow to step away seems to be real deal. If that is truly the case, then we’d be horribly saddened to see him go, but based on this US trailer for his final film, The Wind Rises, he’s going out on quite the last hurrah!

As The Wind Rises tells the life story – though a very stylized, fantastical version of it –  of Jiro Horikoshi, the aeronautic engineer who designed the Zero fighter plane used by Japan during WWII, specifically the bombing of Pearl Harbour, it’s been uncertain just the film would be marketed to US audiences.

Well now the plan seems clear: Show them a really beautiful looking trailer for the film, stuffed with quotes from all their American peers telling them what a beautiful looking film it is.

In The Wind Rises, Jiro dreams of flying and designing beautiful airplanes, inspired by the famous Italian aeronautical designer Caproni. Nearsighted from a young age and unable to be a pilot, Jiro joins a major Japanese engineering company in 1927 and becomes one of the world’s most innovative and accomplished airplane designers. The film chronicles much of his life, depicting key historical events, including the Great Kanto Earthquake of 1923, the Great Depression, the tuberculosis epidemic and Japan’s plunge into war. Jiro meets and falls in love with Nahoko, and grows and cherishes his friendship with his colleague Honjo. Writer and director Hayao Miyazaki pays tribute to engineer Jiro Horikoshi and author Tatsuo Hori in this epic tale of love, perseverance, and the challenges of living and making choices in a turbulent world.

The Wind Rises will be taking flight on a limited release on February 21, 2014.
