Toby Kebbell reveals the new origin for Doctor Doom in FANTASTIC FOUR

Josh Trank’s Fantastic Four reboot has been locked up tighter than Star Wars at this point, a rather impressive feat. It’s also received a ton of naysay, as people have just ripped into the project, giving it absolute grief. I don’t want to do that. I want to give Fantastic Four the benefit of doubt. I may be changing my mind however, after hearing the plans for Doctor Doom’s new origin, who happens to be the greatest comic book villain of all time.Fantastic Four doom

Speaking to Collider, Doctor Doom himself, Tony Kebbell, revealed that the infamous monarch of Latveria would have a more humble origin, so STFU U NEWB:

I’m excited to see it too, and my nerves really…The only thing I can tease you about is what I worked on most was the voice because nobody—even in the cartoons, when I was watching them I was like, “So where’s he from?”  There’s a mild change and I’ll tell you because of our history.

He’s Victor Domashev, not Victor Von Doom in our story.  And I’m sure I’ll be sent to jail for telling you that.  The Doom in ours—I’m a programmer.  Very anti-social programmer.  And on blogging sites I’m “Doom”. Yeah, it was cool man.  Josh, the whole deal, the lo-fi way he did it, the ultra-real.  It was just nice to do that.  It was nice to be feeling like we had to come to terms with what was given by this incident.

Well…crap. I get that Fantastic Four is going for a more grounded approach, but I’m not digging this approach to their greatest nemesis. In the comics Doctor Doom blames Reed Richards for a botched experiment that keft his face scarred, vowing vengeance on the future Fantastic Four leader and to prove that he is superior in every single way. To do so, Doom mastered mystic and technological arts, and combined them in a suit forged by evil anti-Buddhist monks, single-handledly conquered his home nation and went into battle wielding the most fearsome power of all: Diplomatic immunity.

Screw the grounded and realistic approach, that’s the Doc Doom that I want to see. That, and we’ll most likely get a sequel along the lines of Fantastic Four 2: The Search for Sue’s Nudes at the rate that this film is lowballing the origins of the FF.

  1. Apparently Sue Storm can’t make herself invisible only her clothes. Oh wait that is The Fantastic Foursome, sorry different movie.

Okay, look, so I’ve done my fair share of defending the new Fantastic Four movie. Casting Michael B. Jordan as Johnny Storm didn’t rankle me as much as it did others. Yes, it smacked of just filling a quota, and it more than likely is just that. But there’s also the fact that Jordan and director Josh Trank have a fantastic working/personal relationship and have produced gold in the past which is why the role was also written specifically for Jordan. That’s most definitely not the only reason though, as the studio clearly also just wants to tap into a new demographic, and that I’m definitely not defending.

What I would throw my support behind is that making him black, doesn’t really change the character much, if at all. A single line of dialogue to say that he and Sue – played by the very white Kate Mara – are half-siblings is enough to explain everything. Other than that, their relationship could be 100% the same. As somebody who has a half-brother who has a totally different skin tone and ethnic makeup, I can guarantee that that makes little difference to the family aspect which is what FF is all about.

However, I’m now officially drawing a line in the sand and (mixed metaphor aside) I’m reaching for my pitchfork and torch just like all the other “upset fans” have been doing.

Victor Von Doom is the iron fisted ruler of Latveria, the scientific genius, the master of the dark arts, the ego-maniacal despot known as the fearsome Doctor Doom who in many – and my – estimation, is the greatest villain in Marvel history.

He is not Perez Hilton in a Halloween costume!!!

Look, regarding Michael B Jordan being a black human torch, who cares?! There are many families out there and especially in this day and age that have parents of different race (or same gender parents) with kids that look skin tonally different. Fire example kids can be twins but one is Irish white and the other mexican tanned. That’s genetics. It’s actually one of the reasons i disliked the original films… They tried to force Jessica Alba, who has french canadian and mexican parents, to be a white blonde when her skin colour is naturally not. Naturally it didn’t fit and for me that was more of an issue than a black human torch.

If it’s really an issue then make them adopted… They are siblings/family first, biologically or not it’s that bond in their relationship and that of the fantastic four that is important.

This new news about von doom not being von doom smacks of idocity from fox… its like calling peter parker “peter smith” and making him a rich kid. It insults his character and motivation for why he is that way… is mr fantastic going to be an obnoxious jock? Is the thing going to be barney rubble… who knows…

I’ll make my final assessment once I see the movie but now I’m in no rush/have the will to see it…

Doctor Doom is… a terrible hacker stereotype from the 90’s. Gosh. This movie is starting to sound like one giant “we’re so cool, and different, and cool, and hip, and cool, and edgy, and cool, and different, and cool” fest. I’m okay with changes to canon and whatnot, but come on… there are limits & this stupidity seriously tests them.

Are they kidding with this FF movie?! Trying to force the Fantastic Four story and aesthetics into the lo-fi and “ultra-real” can be read as: Nerd shame….Not a single dime. http://filmcutting.com/toby-kebbell-revealed-a-new-origin-for-the-fantastic-fours-doom/
