You know, for a pretty boy, Tom Hardy sure is damn good at hiding those razor-sharp cheek bones. The chameleon of an actor often transforms himself to the point of being almost unrecognizable for a role and for his latest, as Batman’s new nemesis, Bane, he’s done it again.

But this time he’s had to get all gimpy and gravelly as he revealed to Entertainment Weekly.

On having to wear the gimp suit/steampunk mask that Christopher Nolan had created for the character:

“I think he worried it would be something I might not consider because wearing a mask might damage my career or something. He thought I’d be worried that the audience couldn’t see my beautiful face.”

“Like I care. It’s Chris Nolan! I would wear a paper bag over my head for that man.”

As those lucky few that were able to see the Dark Knight Rises IMAX sneek peek attached the Mission Impossible: Ghost Protocol last December know, Bane has been given a very distinct voice, which some found a little hard to decipher. Hardy speaks about the how’s and why’s of that choice:

“There were two doors we could walk through. We could play a very straightforward villain or we could go through this very quirky door, which is totally justified by the text but may seem very, very stupid.”

“It’s a risk, because we could be laughed at—or it could be very fresh and exciting,.”

“The audience mustn’t be too concerned about the mumbly voice. As the film progresses, I think you’ll be able to tune to its setting.”

After the iconic and completely unexpected performance that the late Heath Ledger ended up giving as the Joker in Dark Knight, it’s only natural that Hardy would face some comparison, but the actor clearly stipulates that Bane is a totally different animal:

“I think the politics of the film are going to be hotly debated one way or another, as they were in the last film,”

“The Joker didn’t care—he just wanted to see the world burn, and he was a master of chaos and destruction, unscrupulous and crazy. Bane is not that guy.”

“There is a very meticulous and calculated way about Bane. There is a huge orchestration of organization to his ambition. He is also a physical threat to Batman. There is nothing vague about Bane. No jokes. He’s a very clean, clear villain.”

A whole pile of new images have also been released over the last few days which you can check out in the gallery below.
