Tonight, on Top List Thursday Gear! Kervyn attempts to join the cast of The Raid 3: Silat yo pants as a stuntmen and is murdered, James takes enough drugs to actually enjoy The Amazing Spider-Man 2, I get eaten alive by a rabid band of Young Adult novelists and we look at the top ten cars to grace the silver screen!

  • The Fast And The Furious – Dodge Charger

1969-Dodge-charger-fast-and-furious

At number ten on our list, we have the Dodge Charger from the first Fast and Furious film, a car so devastatingly powerful that Hollywood could only withstand the full force of its magnificence for several minutes near the end of the movie. Massively intimidating, able to raise oil prices around the globe with a simple rev and undeniably cool, the car got the send-off that it deserved when Vin Diesel took it for a spin.

Namely being run through with a train as if it were some sort of automobile version of Count Dracula in need of a well-done stake through the heart.

  • Batman/Batman Returns – The Batmobile

Batmobile

Choosing your favourite Batmobile is like choosing your favourite testicle. Fortunately, we flipped a coin, got rid of ol’ leftie and went with the classic Burton version of the crime-fighting vehicle. A work of art that was built to look good, this Batmobile was nevertheless an expensive triumph that was so wonderfully reliable, that Burton and his crew could actually use the two available vehicles for actual dangerous stunt work instead of having to rely on miniature effects.

Pity that the canopy had the habit of shortening Batman’s ears.

  • The Blues Brothers – The Bluesmobile

Bluesmobile

Loud, obnoxious and barely holding it together. An apt description for James Belushi in the Blues Brothers, but less about him and more about the iconic Bluesmobile.

That signature vehicle may not have been a looker. It may not have been safe for the road, subtle or have had four tires which were roadworthy. It probably guzzled petrol like an Asgardian at a schwarma palace. It quite frankly, was a terrible car. But any vehicle that can give not only one police cruiser, but several, a run for their money deserves a spot in this hall of fame.

  • Goldfinger/Skyfall – Aston Martin DB-5

Aston martin DB5

Do you happen to have more money than sense or Scrooge McDuck? A love for the brutal combat of ancient Rome but an aversion to the copious amounts of crimson that were shed back then? Well James Bond’s Aston Martin DB-5 may be the car that you were looking for.

Tricked out with more gadgets than Tony Stark’s sock drawer and almost as lethal, the DB-5 almost stole the spotlight away from 007 himself before it meant an untimely end at the hands of a Japanese kill-squad and a vengeful oak tree. Still, it got better and was last seen adding some extra style to the previous Bond flick, Skyfall.

Sans most of the gadgets of course, although one wonders if there is a deleted scene where M did indeed push the ejector seat button.

  • Christine

Christine

Vicious, bold and the number one killer of teenagers around the world. And that’s before this 1958 Plymouth Fury managed to contract a case of the killer spirits. Still, the car was most certainly worth having around even if it did cause madness in its owners and violently murder anyone who got in its way.

After all, having a homicidal cruiser with a built-in panel-beater is worth all that mental trauma, I reckon.

  • Back To The Future – The Delorean DMC-12

November 22nd, 2009 @ 15:41:23

Able to go from 0-88mph in yesterday, the Delorean is what happens when you unhinge science and allow it run free on a vehicle that originally shipped with an engine that was more disappointing than receiving socks or soap on a rope for Christmas.

Sexier than ever thanks to the various Doc Brown upgrades, the car features more embellishments than your usual Boksburg Golf GTI, but at least it makes its own go-faster stripes when it breaks the fourth dimension.

  • Ghostbusters 1 and 2 – The Ecto-1

ecto-1

While we most certainly are afraid of many, many things on this site, ghosts ain’t one of them. That’s all thanks to the Ghostbusters, and their ear-bleedingly loud transportation known as the Ecto-1, a converted 1959 Cadillac Miller-Meteor. Old school and cool, it’s the kind of vehicle that took subtlety outside and shot it in the head.

But hey, at least it can take a corner with ease, even if it is transporting several passengers and unlicensed nuclear reactors!

  • Mad Max – The Interceptor

mad-max-interceptor

At some point in your life, you are going to piss off an Australian. And you better prey to their various filthy comedians that it isn’t an Australian riding around in a supercharged Ford Falcom (XB) that wants to have a friendly word with you. Mate.

The Falcom is revenge on four wheels. It’s a highly-tuned instrument of vengeance and in the right hands, a force to be reckoned with. But in the hands of a completely psychotic Mel Gibson hellbent on getting his pound of flesh? It’s pure POWEEEEEER!

  • Smokey and the Bandit – Pontiac Trans-Am

Trans Am

It’s eastbound and down, loaded up and truckin’. And it’s going to do what they say can’t be done. The Pontiac Trans-Am has one simple objective in the classic Smokey and the Bandit movies: Drive fast, look good and provide a decent distraction to the resident highway patrol so that a truck filled with illegal beer can make it across state lines.

Combined with the natural showmanship of the one and only Burt Reynolds thus resulted in a duo that were stylin’ and profilin’, while Jackie Gleason was huffin’ and puffin’ in hot pursuit.

  • Bullitt – Ford Mustang

Bullitt

If your teachers ever tell you that Darwinism is the precursor to evolution theories, slap them as quickly as you can. Because nothing would ever be the same when Steve McQueen took the drop-dead sexy Ford Mustang for a spin in Bullitt. Evolving the car and the entire film industry with unbelievable power and grace, Steve McQueen did to traditional car chases what the Big Show did to Rey Mysterio.

Smack them upside the head so damn hard that the impact would be felt for years later.

I have the Blu-Ray Bullit DVD. Money very well spent. That chase scene on high volume is better than any music.

Where’s Eleanor? After all, she holds the record for the longest car chase in movie history…

It was a really hard choice between Mustangs. I felt like the Bullitt Mustang was more deserving than Eleanor, when I wrote this up. Still, it’d easily make it onto a sequel post.

Yeah, it is a hard choice. If there’s a sequel post also consider Vanishing Point’s Dodge Challenger, the car from The Car and Nick Nolte’s “piece of shit sky-blue” Cadillac in 48 Hours. That joke alone makes the car immortal!

My Uncle bought a Trans-am shortly after smokey and the bandit. It really was a cool car.
