Top List Thursday – Top Ten Actors Who Almost Played Famous Roles – Part 2

If you’re anything like me, you’ve spent the last two weeks since Kervyn’s list of actors who nearly landed famous roles picturing how great (and really, really weird) it would be if Bill Murray was cast as Batman. Well, there is some good news…there’s more! As an added bonus, I promise to not mention David Schwimmer even once.

  • Jennifer Lawrence – Bella Swan in The Twilight Saga

1

Social media sweetheart and Academy Awards nominee Jennifer Lawrence has managed to make the entire world fall in love with her, which is almost exactly the opposite reaction which Kristen Stewart had on everyone but Twihards. Would things have been the same though, if Mystique was staring deeply into the eyes of various werewolves or vampires? We’ll never know but thanks to The Winter’s Bone, a star was born.

  • Danny DeVito – George Costanza in Seinfeld

2

Jason Alexander absolutely killed as the unfortunately idiotic George Costanza, but reportedly Danny DeVito was interested in the role. Fortunately for Mr. Alexander this never happened, but I have a suspicion that we’ve already received a taste of what might have been when looking at DeVito’s Frank “The Warthog” Reynolds in It’s Always Sunny In Philidelphia.

  • David Boreanaz – Bruce Wayne in Batman Begins

3

Holly Boreanaz, Batman! Can someone please still make this happen? Is it too late? Damnit, Affleck! Okay, so, I obviously really like the idea of Whedon-alumni David Boreanaz but who are we kidding … we all love Christian’s Bale raspy take on the dark knight. Having been the original choice for Nolan’s Batman though, the universe seem to make it up to him by keeping him in close proximity to a Deschanel sister.

  • Lindsay Lohan – Regina George in Mean Girls

5

Ironically turning down the role of Regina George in Mean Girls because she was scared people would confuse her character with her real personality, she opted instead to play the part of the naive mathlete Katy, allowing Rachel McAdams to fill the role as the original Queen Bee. As we all know, this turned out great and Mean Girls is still a fan favourite, years later. SO fetch.

  • Tom Cruise – Tony Stark in Iron Man

4

Come on, admit it – you can’t picture this either, can you? Thankfully for us, Robert Downey Jr. IS Iron Man as Tom Cruise didn’t think the script was strong enough.  However wrong it was, Mr. Cruise did continue fully running with his taste for sci-fi which none of us can complain about.

  • Leonardo Di Caprio – Patrick Bateman in American Psycho

6

While we all know that Di Caprio has the acting chops to pull off almost any role, once again Christian Bale managed own a role so completely, it is almost impossible to imagine the Wolf match the same brooding insanity that Bale excels at.

  • Nicolas Cage – Green Goblin in Spider-Man

9

Will I sound completely insane if I said that I wish this could have happened? Don’t get me wrong, I am a big fan of Willem Dafoe and I love his manic yet intelligent Norman Osborne, but I have a suspicion that Nicolas Cage could have been incredibly memorable as our favourite Power Ranger, the Green Goblin. Imagine the faces he could pull…it would have been a wonderland of Cage-madness.

  • Russell Crowe – Wolverine in X-Men

7

Once again, this is a case where a role is so entirely suited to an actor that it is almost impossible to imagine anyone else in the role but…for a minute, just imagine Russell Crowe as our favourite wielder of sideburns and adamantium claws. While I’m not sure if he could have quite matched the physicality I would have loved to catch a glimpse at what he would have brought to the character.

  • Sean Connery – Morpheus in The Matrix

8

Yesh, I do believe that I can imagine Sean Connery as Morpheus…or would that have been Morpheush? However, 007 didn’t quite “get” the role and it went to Lawrence Fishburne instead. I don’t think anyone is complaining since, as we all know, Fishburne absolutely killed it as our favourite Matrix truther.

  • Will Smith – Django in Django Unchained

django26f-1-web

Will Smith reportedly turned down the role as Django in Django Unchained because the role ‘wasn’t big enough’ … who turns down a role in a Tarantino film? Luckily for us, Jamie Foxx filled the spot and commanded the screen opposite the equally talented Christopher Waltz and Leonardo DiCaprio  in Tarantino’s Western bloodbath. Honestly, I think that even the Fresh Prince was out-cooled this time.

What’s worse, Smith turned it down coz he didn’t think that Django was going to be the main character. I mean, the movie is kinda called DJANGO Unchained!

No to Will Smith, Russell Crowe & Tom Cruise – it’s Iron MAN not Iron MIDGET #amirite. The others, not bad.

Boreanaz would have made an awesome Batman/Bruce Wayne. The End.
