Sometimes, you just can’t get the whole movie. That’s the beauty of the age we live in now. If you wanted to see Highlander II: The Director’s Cut and be even more confused back then, you’d have to drive around town to find that VHS.

But DVD and Blu-Ray? Why, a deleted scene is only a menu-click away! Those extra scenes can help make a film even better. And here’s ten such scenes that were left on the cutting room floor.

Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back – That’s nasty

It’s impossible to not like that duo of chuckleheads from New Jersey, the heterosexual life partners known as Jay and Silent Bob. They got their own film in 2001, and from that point on swear jars were forever filled. When they eventually get to Hollywood though, viewers almost got a taste of just how filthy the inner mind of Jay really was.

And as that one hooker puts it, Jay’s requests to get nasty just crossed the line. And considering that this LA, that’s damn nasty!

X-Men 3: The Last Stand – Beast does Shakespeare

I may give this film a LOT of flak, but I’ll give the crew behind it this: Casting Kelsey Grammar as Beast was pure brilliance. He brought a sense of dignity to an otherwise dull movie, and hearing the blue-furred wonder quote some of Shakespeare’s immortal lines, makes Wolverine’s speech-giving skills look crap in comparison. I mean let’s face facts, you know you’re a great actor when you’re dressed like a troll doll in leather and just got a great reaction from your lines.

Terminator 3 – Sergeant Candy

In the future, machines will rule the world. But how did mankind wind up under the boot of the T-1000 robot? This handy little scene explains that perfectly, while also introducing audiences to the horror of Arnold Schwarzenegger with a fake American accent that has to be heard to be believed.

In Bruges – He needs a different doctor

Waitaminute, is that the Doctor? And we though that Peter Capaldi had a few skeletons in his closet? In case you can’t see it, the clip above feature number 11 himself, Matt Smith casually walking into a police station and beheading a detective that had been giving him some problems in a flashback dreamed up by an old hitman. Yeah, he’s going to need a second opinion.

High Fidelity – Records for sale

I loved this film. Because it’s a perfect analogue to what it’s like to collect comic books. You spend months and years to build up that collection, hitting flea markets and dodgy cafes hoping to find some audio/printed treasure, and at the end of the day, looking at that collection is a damn satisfying feeling.

And if I were in the exact same shoes as John Cusack, I’d be as flabbergasted as he was in this little scene of revenge. And if those were a bunch of comics being offered to me for $50…I’d still take them, because I am a bastard.

Lethal Weapon – Bringing a handgun to a sniper fight

This is a bit of an odd scene. It survives in some TV broadcasts, but exists only on DVDs in other countries. If you haven’t seen it though, it’s a perfect example of how Mel Gibson’s Riggs is a lethal weapon from any distance, with any weapon. And just how suicidal you have to be to take on a sniper armed only with an unlit cigarette and a standard 9mm pistol.

Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 1 – Goodbye Dudley

Throughout the Harry Potter movies, his biggest enemy wasn’t Voldemort, giant spiders or whup-yo-ass trees. It was Dudley. He was everything that Harry wasn’t when he lived with his relatives. Loved, cared for and well-off. He was also a jackass, petty, violent and prone to bouts of assholism. But seeing Dudley finally reconcile his feelings towards Harry in the final films? Now that’s full circle right there yo.

Kill Bill Volume 2 – Bill vs Black Dynamite

I love this scene. Not because the sound effects are perfect. Or that the fight choreography is fluid, stylish and well paced. But because of the fact that Michael “Black Dynamite” Jai White does a dead-on impersonation of those awful voices we would hear in B-grade Kung Fu flicks. That’s something that can only be perfected by watching one too many of those films. You bastard.

Lord of the Rings: Return of the King – The paths of the dead

I asked the man who broke the bank for his opinion on this one. and as the owner of the really, reeeeeally long versions of the Lord of the Rings trilogy, this was  a spot-on decision. Return of the King was already a long film, so some scenes had to be cut. And one scene in particular, where Aragorn confronts an army of ghosts and asks for their aid in the upcoming battle, felt a bit too short. But this extended version of that confrontation fleshes it out more, showcasing just how talented director Peter Jackson is when he switches from light horror, to drama to the pure anguish of Aragorn when he believes that all is lost.

Anchorman – Wake up Ron Burgundy

The first Anchorman film is a classic of note. But it’s a film that also had plenty of improv, and scenes left on the cutting room floor. So many scenes in fact, that you could have made an entire movie out of them, Which is just what happened in Wake Up Ron Burgundy. See Champ confess his love for Ron! Watch the channel four news team almost resort to cannibalism! Brick Tamland!

It’s the longest deleted scene ever made. And it’s just as brilliant as the original film.

  1. Version of Jay&Bob I saw had that in. I think the Beast scene is a bit over the top so glad it isn’t in. That Lethal Weapon scene – I believe my DVD has that in. Great stuff!
O ja – Terminator scene was PAINFUL!
