Toshiba announces the death HD-DVD – OFFICIAL

That’s it, it’s all over.

Toshiba has just announced on their official website that they are no longer going to be developing HD-DVD products

Toshiba Corporation today announced that it has undertaken a thorough review of its overall strategy for HD DVD and has decided it will no longer develop, manufacture and market HD DVD players and recorders.

There are now no longer any if’s, buts or maybe’s. The war is over and Blu-Ray has won.

I honestly think this is the best thing that could have happened, now we can all move into the HD world and look forward to some cheap Chinese Blu-Ray players in the coming months.

It seems Sony’s belief in the embedded Blu-Ray player paid off after all.

well… thing is… I rate in about 2 weeks (or less) Microsoft will release the all new blu-ray add-on.
But, alas, Sony might be smart and make Microsoft buy the license to make a blu-ray add on, which sony won’t sell to microsoft because that will get more people to buy the ps3…

    Ahhh… Sony, you heartless barstards

Scotty, Microsoft could in turn refuse Sony MS OS licenses and thereby kill their computer business. Unlikely on both counts.

But they are not holding a gun against your head and saying ‘If you want to play games on our new pc, sorry console, you will have to purchase this Blu Ray player’.
An HD drive was never a prerquisite to playing games on the 360. So you can can that thinking Abe.

“Consider this — the Playstation 3 has officially become the only console that’s capable of playing high-def movies and although some may still find some benefit in owning Microsoft’s HD DVD player, it wouldn’t surprise me if they landed in the junkyard in a matter of minutes after Toshiba announces its failure.

Realizing this, does Microsoft want to look like the loser who doesn’t have the functionality to compete? Even worse, won’t the Xbox 360 suddenly look like the console that may be able to play games, but can’t let you enjoy high-def movies? And now that the PS3 is much closer to the Xbox 360 in terms of price, how many people that are looking for an “in” to the next-gen format would choose Microsoft’s console over Sony’s?

I think it’s a good day for PS3 sales, but the question will always be whether someone is looking for a games console or a BD player (They won so I’ll concede to tan :p) that plays games.

Whether the PS3 is finally filling it’s catalogue or not, the damage to its reputation is already done. The 360 is for games, the PS3 is for people who don’t really know what they want. BR is just a Sony greed vehicle. Why? Because all BD players except the PS3 are non-compliant and more expensive.

@ Jimbob: Yeah, maybe a bit. But it’s an ‘anti Sony format’ thing, not a console thing.
