Who needs horror movies when real life is scary enough? That’s just for adults, for kids it can be even worse sometimes. And Beware the Slenderman is an upcoming documentary that reminds us of the impact social media and horror stories can have on the minds of little kids.

The doc retells the story of a crime that tools place in Waukesha, Wisconsin back on May 31, 2014. Twelve-year old Payton Leutner was stabbed 19 times by two of her friends after they lured her into the woods during a slumber party because they thought a fake internet ghoul named Slenderman told them to do it. Yip, it’s creepy and yet apparently, all true.

And now HBO has just released the first trailer for its documentary about the story, titled Beware the Slenderman, which explores the crime and how the minds of the girls were potentially impacted by the stories they found on the internet.

The Slenderman is a fictional boogeyman that was created in 2009 for a photoshop contest for an online website and then became an internet sensation. The creation is of a very tall and faceless man in a black suit who lurks in the woods, has tentacles and preys on children. It’s all fictional, but to the little girls impacted by this story, it didn’t appear so. The story has a somewhat happy ending at least for Leutner who was able to drag herself to the side of a road while bleeding and is still alive today while her two attackers are now going through criminal court.

Now I don’t buy the concept that violent games, movies and music can insight someone to become a criminal, but I do believe age restrictions exist for a reason. And while the internet is a difficult place to police, perhaps more could be done to prevent creepy stories like this getting to kids minds. Or, the parents could at least talk a little about what their kids are doing on the internet. Mind blowing idea I know, but it may work.

The documentary was directed by Irene Taylor Brodsky and written by Brodsky and Sophie Harris. Regardless of how you feel about the reasons behind the tragedy, this documentary looks like it will be quite a frightening experience. And all the more because we know it’s real. It’s like believing gingers can steal your soul and then bumping into Nick and finding out it’s completely true.
