collateral beauty

For those of you that like your holiday movies with a little less cheeriness and glee and more a somber feeling of reality instead, then the Will Smith drama Collateral Beauty is perhaps right up your alley.

The film sees Smith as a man who has lost all hope after losing his daughter. As a way of coping with his depression, he writes letters to the concepts of Time (Jacob Latimore), Death (Helen Mirren) and Love (Keira Knightley). Then one day, these “concepts” really start showing up one by one to help him work through all the heartbreak and bitterness he’s been carrying around. Is this really the cosmos reaching out to him with answers, or is there something more practical at work here?

Choose for yourself if you’re up to watching a trailer that is full of schmaltzy moments designed to make you all teary eyed.

Personally, I’m making a hunch that the whole thing is a big rouse from his friends (played by Edward Norton, Kate Winslet and Michael Pena) to help him get through his mourning better, but the script will hopefully be not as straightforward as it seems. The cast looks fantastic at least.

There is no doubt Will Smith is a fantastic actor. I do think the fact that he has never won an Oscar though is perhaps driving him to pursue some of these darker, dramatic roles. Don’t get me wrong, I think he is great at them too as well, but I would take a Will Smith as Deadshot any day rather than as a teary-eyed father in mourning. The film just seems a little too much for me and the trailer just leaves me desperately waiting for the Fresh Prince to crack a joke that never comes.

Maybe I like my action heroes a little less sentimental and more testosterone enthused. I can be shallow like that at times.

Collateral Beauty is directed by David Frankel (The Devil Wears Prada) and is due out on December 16th. Perfect for those looking to watch a movie this Christmas that is not Star Wars related.

The official synopsis is below:

When a successful New York advertising executive suffers a great tragedy he retreats from life. While his concerned friends try desperately to reconnect with him, he seeks answers from the universe by writing letters to Love, Time and Death. But it’s not until his notes bring unexpected personal responses that he begins to understand how these constants interlock in a life fully lived, and how even the deepest loss can reveal moments of meaning and beauty.
