Earlier this morning, we showed you the IQ destroying trailer for Jason Friedberg and Aaron Seltzer’s latest sad attempt to be funny, The Starving Games.  Well, I’m unfortunately here to tell you that that was not the worst trailer you’ll see today.

The fact that the real worst trailer is for Killing Season, a movie starring John Travolta and Robert De Niro – two of the most celebrated actors of the last few decades – just means that this has now gone pass unintentionally funny and right into tragic.

American military veteran Benjamin Ford (Robert De Niro) has fled to a cabin retreat somewhere in the Appalachian Mountains, to forget the painful memories of the Bosnian War he fought in. One day, visitor Emil Kovac (John Travolta), a European tourist, knocks on his door, and the two men begin an unlikely friendship. When it develops that Kovac is in fact a former Serbian soldier bent on revenge, there begins a one-on-one confrontation and battle between the two throughout the harsh mountain environment.

Eish! That looks like it should be starring Lorenzo Lamas and “Stone Cold” Steve Austin and being introduced as part of Friday Action Night toniiiiiight on eTV. I mean sure, both De Niro and Travolta have made some seriously questionable career choices over the last couple of years, but surely they can’t be this hard up for cash, can they?

And while I’ve never had much love for Ghost Rider or Daredevil (though the Director’s Cut is a far superior animal), this still looks way beneath the directorial skills of Mark Steven Johnson, who in the past you could always rely on to at least phone it in. Here, it looks like you’re getting a “please call me” at best.

Now, I’ll be fair and say that this movie may turn out to be far better than what this gagworthy trailer would indicate (it’s written by Evan “Snow White and the Huntsman” Daughtery and was originally being developed as a directing vehicle for John McTiernan, with Travolta originally being pitted against his Face/Off nemesis Nicolas Cage) but Travolta’s dodgy Eastern European accent and even dodgier facial hair tells me that I shouldn’t be getting my hopes up.

Killing Season hunts down audiences in limited cinemas on July 12, 2013.
