What in the name of M. Night Shake-It-Like-A-Polaroid-Picture is going on here?! I thought we all had an understanding that Shyamalan no longer made good movies, and thus we were free to mock him at all times? (E.g. our long running site gag of not being able to actually write out his name, as seen in the preceding sentence). Sure his last effort, The Visit, was pretty solid, but that was just a fluke, right? Even a broken clock is right twice a day?

Well in what is almost one of his once acclaimed plot twists, the filmmaker has gone and made a film that actually looks promising again. Split stars James McAvoy as an intense man named Kevin who kidnaps three young women. That would be bad enough, but then the women discover that their “kidnapper” is actually just one of 23 different personalities possessed by their assailant. And damn is this one bonkers!

Check out the trailer below:

While the mental divisions of those with dissociative identity disorder have long fascinated and eluded science, it is believed that some can also manifest unique physical attributes for each personality, a cognitive and physiological prism within a single being.

Though Kevin (James McAvoy) has evidenced 23 personalities to his trusted psychiatrist, Dr. Fletcher (Betty Buckley), there remains one still submerged who is set to materialize and dominate all the others. Compelled to abduct three teenage girls led by the willful, observant Casey (Anya Taylor-Joy), Kevin reaches a war for survival among all of those contained within him—as well as everyone around him—as the walls between his compartments shatter apart.

Well, damn, that looks intriguing. Yes, sure the whole “changing his body chemistry” thing has huge potential for some serious shark jumping, and this movie could rapidly go from “crazy in a good way” to “crazy in a veeeeery bad way”, but if done properly this could actually be entertaining. Hell, I think it’s safe to say that at least it won’t be boring.

However it does turn out, I hope Shyamalan and producer Jason Blum have seasoned all those set decorations well, because it looks like McAvoy is going to be chewing all the scenery on this one.

Split is scheduled for release on January 20, 2017.
