Ever since Tony Stark first walked into that bar at the end of The Incredible Hulk prompting fanboys around the world to instantly void their bowels in glee, Hollywood has gone gaga over shared cinematic universes. None of the subsequent attempts have managed to copy Marvel’s success though (Sorry, Warner Bros/DC Comics, but it’s true), but that hasn’t stopped studios from trying. And in the case of Universal and their planned movie monster universe, trying twice!

2014’s Dracula Untold was originally supposed to be the start of this universe, as Luke Evans’ bloodsucking count was reinvented a grim anti-hero. At the end of that film, he was even left in modern times to battle some ancient evil, so as to nicely tie into the other planned movies. Except that Dracula Told wasn’t as successful at the box office as Universal would have hoped, and a number of critics thought it actually… sucked (For the record, I thought it was okay). Fast forward a couple of years though, and Universal are now ready take another crack at this whole shared universe thing. And this time they’re rolling out the big guns as A-list Hollywood star Tom Cruise leads a new version of Universal’s most successful monster franchise, The Mummy.

And now we can finally catch a glimpse of it. No, really it’s just a glimpse, as Universal has released this 18-second long teaser trailer and poster in preparation for the full first trailer which will be dropping this coming Sunday (because nothing says Christian holy day quite like a scientologist battling the undead!). Check them out below!

Tom Cruise headlines a spectacular, all-new cinematic version of the legend that has fascinated cultures all over the world since the dawn of civilization: The Mummy.

Thought safely entombed in a crypt deep beneath the unforgiving desert, an ancient queen (Sofia Boutella of Kingsman: The Secret Service and Star Trek Beyond) whose destiny was unjustly taken from her, is awakened in our current day, bringing with her malevolence grown over millennia and terrors that defy human comprehension.

From the sweeping sands of the Middle East through hidden labyrinths under modern-day London, The Mummy brings a surprising intensity and balance of wonder and thrills in an imaginative new take that ushers in a new world of gods and monsters.

From the little we can see there, that actually appears pretty cool. And how creepy do those eyes look?! That being said, dear gods, please let Sofia Boutella’s Mummy not just turn out like the horribly bad Enchantress in Suicide Squad. A man can only cope with so many lame ancient sorcerers dressed in rags and body paint doing the limbo in front of a magic portal!

Besides for Tom Cruise, who will be playing some kind of Special Forces soldier, and Boutella, who plays a new female version of the titular classic movie monster, The Mummy‘s cast also includes Annabelle Wallis, Jake Johnson, and Courtney B. Vance. Oscar winner Russell Crowe will also be showing up in the film in some type of cameo as Dr. Jekyll – yes, that Dr. Jekyll of and Mr. Hyde fame – setting his character up for his own future movie.

The Mummy was written by Jon Spaihts (Prometheus) and Christopher McQuarrie (Jack Reacher, Mission: Impossible – Rogue Nation) and is directed by Alex Kurtzman (writer/producer on Star Trek franchise), who is also producing along with producers Chris Morgan (Fast & Furious franchise) and Sean Daniels (The Mummy trilogy). Kurtzman and Morgan will also be overseeing all the other titles in this shared movie monster universe, which includes the upcoming The WolfmanThe Invisible Man (with Johnny Depp), Bride of Frankenstein (Javier Bardem is in talks to play Frankenstein’s monster), and Van Helsing, which are all in various stages of development.

The Mummy is scheduled for release on June 9, 2017.
