It’s not exactly as if the Jurassic World sequel needed much of a storyline other than to have dinosaurs free on some terrain chasing humans. Or if you’re Nick, just have Chris Pratt do his thing and not even have dinosaurs. But any story is better if there is added motivation on the part of its protagonists (aka the dinosaurs in this case) and we now know what that motivation will likely be, thanks to Jurassic World director and the sequel’s producer Colin Trevorrow who shared the news in a chat with El Mundo:

The dinosaurs will be a parable of the treatment animals receive today: the abuse, medical experimentation, pets, having wild animals in zoos like prisons, the use the military has made of them, animals as weapons.

We obviously saw the precursor to this idea in the first Jurassic World film, where the military had interest in the use of dinosaurs and funded large parts of the park. Trevorrow elaborated further on how the follow-up plans to take this part of the narrative further and the different vision that the sequel’s director J.A. Bayona is bringing to the film:

The second part will be a very different movie that will explore new paths. For that reason, it was clear that it needed to be Bayona who would direct it, in order to have it grow and evolve with his very personal vision.

With the use of genetic modification, its likely the sequel will also have even more weirder and wilder dinosaur creations to fear. Because you just have to breed dangerous dinosaurs, don’t you?Its more fun that way. And the military will have you believe more profitable.  They could just breed friendly dinosaurs and sell them to zoos instead which is a much bigger market, but I guess that is why I’m a writer and not an economist.

It’s no surprise that they have gone this route and obviously gives a much more sympathetic purpose to the dinosaurs’ rage and killing spree. It also makes you want the dinosaurs to win, which I’m hoping one day, they do. The film is meant to be a reflection of the world’s capitalist society, which can be quite sick. It makes you almost want to breed dinosaurs yourself so you can set them on humanity. Or have I perhaps strayed too far into future sequel territory already.

The Jurassic World sequel does not have an official title yet, though it is due for release next year. And it looks like we could be in for a fun ride. I had fears that it would turn into another turkey like the Jurassic Park sequel, but it so far sounds like we’re in safe hands with this one.
