Tuesday Box Office Report: Allegiant gets trampled by some Zoo animals

Yes, Tuesday Box Office Report, as yesterday’s public holiday meant we had an extra day to tally up the box office totals – which is something I really need, as I tend to struggle the moment I run out of fingers and toes to count on.

Anyway!… Thanks to some some other work commitments two weeks ago, I couldn’t make it to the press screening for The Divergent Series: Allegiant, the latest chapter in the YA adaptation franchise starring Shailene Woodley. And with each previous film becoming more and more meh with each release, I felt zero compulsion to rectify that oversight. Seems I wasn’t the only one, as Allegiant opened this weekend past with $29 million dollars in the US. That may be no insignificant amount, but it’s way less than studio estimates and also a massive 44% drop from its predecessor’s opening.

After the limp performance of The Hunger Games: Mockingjay – Part 1 & 2, The Fifth Wave and now also Allegiant,  it would seem that audiences have had enough of this grim, increasingly nonsensical post apocalyptic YA fad. Though there are still a few more productions in the studio pipeline, The Maze Runner appears to be the only worthwhile horse left in this race, even though it already showed a downward trend  between its first and second film’s profits. It will be interesting to see if this prompts Hollywood to kick the whole YA thing to the curb and now latch onto some new craze to milk dry.

One other fad that definitely won’t be going away any time soon is the faith-based drama, which continues to find a lucrative market. The latest addition is Sony’s Miracles From Heaven, headlined by Jennifer Garner and Queen Latifah, which opened Stateside this weekend past with $14.8 million. That may not be the highest opening total ever, but it was enough for 3rd place. And with these faith-based features generally being relatively cheap to produce – in this case it came with a $13 million price tag – it will certainly be profitable despite the overall low numbers.

The only other noteworthy wide-release new entry on the charts was R-rated comedy The Bronze which unfortunately was nowhere – and I mean NOWHERE – remotely close to attaining its namesake this weekend. Despite popular actors Melissa Rauch and Sebastian Stan headlining the raucous comedy, it opened to an absolutely dismal 25th place take of just $421, 434. It opened in 1167 cinemas giving it a paltry $361 per theater average, which grants it the horrible distinction of now becoming the fourteenth worst opening for a wide release and ninth worst per theater average for a wide release of all-time. Yeesh!

Zootopia

What all of this disappointment meant though is that on the other end of the scale, the animals from Disney’s Zootopia got to claim top spot on the box office charts for the third week running, adding another $37.1 million to their coffers. This pushes the film’s domestic total over the $200 million mark while globally it has now brought in a very impressive $593.47 million. That gives it the third highest gross for any Disney animated movie ever behind Big Hero 6 and Frozen (with Big Hero 6‘s $657 million second place spot probably set to fall before Zootopia finishes its theatrical run).

Here’s what’s happening on the rest of the US charts:

  • 1. Zootopia –  $37.1 million (LW: 1st)
  • 2. The Divergent Series: Allegiant  – $29 million (NE)
  • 3. Miracles From Heaven – $14.8 million (NE)
  • 4. 10 Cloverfield Lane – $12.5 million (LW: 2nd)
  • 5. Deadpool – $8 million (LW: 3rd)
  • 6. London Has Fallen – $6.8 million (LW: 4th)
  • 7. Whiskey Tango Foxtrot – $2.8 million (LW: 5th)
  • 8. The Perfect Match– $1.97 million (LW: 6th)
  • 9. The Brothers Grimsby – $1.42 million (LW: 8th)
  • 10. The Revenant – $1.2 million (LW: 11th)

While Miracles From Heaven may be carrying the faith-based torch this week, we do see two other entries in the genre fall off the charts as Risen and The Young Messiah drop to a respective 11th and 13th place. I guess you could even lump Gods of Egypt in there – hey it features Egyptian gods and is an ungodly mess! – as it also tumbled down from 9th to 12th.

All of this godly collapse though gives The Revenant to emulate its lead characters almost inhuman will to live as it claws its way back into the US top 10 charts for the third time since opening back on Christmas Day 2015! Leonardo DiCaprio must be proud.

(LW = Last Week, NE = New Entry)
