Tuesday Box Office Report – Yo Joe, it's Tyler Perry!

After a nine month delay, it was finally time to reenlist and have a front row seat for the battle against Cobra. But believe it or not, the Joes were battling it out on two fronts, with a Tyler Perry rear guard action launching a surprise attack, while CGI heavyweight family film The Croods put up some stiff resistance as well.

But in the end, the people’s elbow took the number one spot, securing victory for the Joes.

Thanks to some savvy marketing from Paramount, audiences flocked to see the sequel, even though it was less than successful in the numbers game. GI Joe: Rise of Cobra managed to rake in over $50 million in its first weekend back in 2010, compared to the $41.2 million that Retaliation took in. The Croods remained firm in second place, although the latest Tyler Perry film arriving in third place was a big surprise. I genuinely mean that. I write about this stuff every day and I had no idea whatsoever that Perry was making a new movie.

Here’s how everyone else did over the long weekend:

  • GI Joe Retaliation – $41.2 Million
  • The Croods – $26.5 Million
  • Tyler Perry’s Temptation: Confession of a marriage counseller – $22.3 Million
  • Olympus Has Fallen – $14 Million
  • Oz The Great And The Powerful – $11.6 Million
  • The Host – $11 Million
  • The Call – $4.8 Million
  • Admission – $3.2 Million
  • Spring Breakers – $2.7 Million
  • The Incredible Burt Wonderstone – $1.3 Million

Twilight author Stephanie Meyer’s The Host failed to make much of a splash at the box office, debuting at sixth place with an $11 million take that was lower than supernatural ensemble film Beautiful Creatures, and far below the original $69 million debut of the first Twilight movie. This weekend also saw Olympus Has Fallen take a hammering, while Jack the Giant Slayer and Identity Thief dropped out of the top ten.

Depends on who gets to see it first. There were no press screenings, so we’ll have to go check it out like everybody else.

Not on your level. I know you’re fanatical about it 🙂 Irrespective of which one of us does the review, I’d actually love to hear your thoughts on it as well. Would be cool to get a true fan’s perspective.

I’d be happy to. Will I get my name up in spotlights?

Well not so much spotlights, more like those lame 12w energy saving globes that 20 mins to work its way up to a murky yellow glow.

Ag, that will suffice. Hey, my fan opinion is worth its weight in gold…
