Green Lantern as a character is one of comic-dom’s best and most popular, but Green Lantern as a movie is a giant piece of emerald excrement. Due to that first part though, Warner Bros is not ready to give up on him on the big-screen, which is why it is believed that he would be showing up in a cameo capacity as part of the Justice League in Batman v Superman: Dawn of Sucky Movie Titles before showing up in the actual Justice League movies and a solo Green Lantern pic.

Now I mentioned “he”, but according to the most recent rumour, I should actually be saying “them” as it claims that the Green Lantern movie won’t just be focusing on the most famous character to bear that name, Hal Jordan (who Ryan Reynolds played in the previous film), but will actually focus on a group of the Earth-based Green Lanterns, specifically John Stewart and Guy Gardner alongside Jordan (sorry Kyle Rayner fans, he’s nowhere to be found here). And now an additional rumour from Latino Review claims that Chris Pine’s recent casting to play Wonder Woman love interest Steve Trevor was actually a smoke-screen, and the Star Trek actor is actually being courted to play the new Hal Jordan.

If that is the case – and honestly, Pine is pretty perfectly cast as Jordan – then who would play the other Lanterns? Based on Tyrese Gibson’s Instagram activity, it seems that he’ll be the one stating the Green Lantern oath as Jon Stewart.

You would think that hints for a role don’t get much clearer than that, but it has to be noted that this is not the first time Gibson has posted some Green Lantern related fan-artwork online. This time appears to be slightly different though, because according to what he told Entertainment Tonight, all those pieces of fan-casting may just actually have led to something actually happening for real.

“There are certain things I can’t speak on. But I will say, however this works out, it’s definitely the fans’ fault. I was at home minding my own business and fans start creating these fan-made videos of me as Green Lantern and I looked into it. I’ve been a fan of the Green Lantern. I took the oath, and I had a meeting at Warner Bros. and certain things were said and talked about. We’ll just see what happens.”

That certainly sounds like he and WB are at least talking about him joining their comic book movie universe. And while I’m really not a fan of Gibson as John Stewart – Hal Jordan is the cocky showboat leader, Guy Gardner is the goofball hothead but Stewart is supposed to be the mature, self-controlled soldier which is not playing to Gibson’s strengths at all – the actor, who is just coming off the incredible record-breaking success of Fast & Furious 7, was quick to point out what he is bringing to the table.

“Listen, these muscles are here and they’re ready to be used. There are are lot of people, domestically and internationally, who’s got love with your boy. I’m coming into this thing with some fans and some box office receipts behind my name and I say that proudly and humbly. I just think I deserve a shot at suiting up and becoming the Green Lantern.”

Whatever happens, I don’t think we’re going to have to wait too long to get some confirmation of all these rumours. With Marvel, Sony and Paramount all skipping the San Diego Comic-Con next month, Warner Bros/DC Comics are pretty much going to have the vaunted Hall H to themselves and it is expected that they will take the opportunity for some major announcements. Bringing out a whole new Green Lantern Corps would certainly fit that description.

So what do you guys think of Pine as Jordan and Gibson as Stewart? Who do you think could play Guy Gardner if he does in fact show up? Personally, I would go with sci-fi stalwart Roger C. Cross for Stewart (though his age may be a factor), and for years there were lots of fans calling for Sean Williams Scott as Gardner, which will certainly not help with Darryn’s almost life-long Stifler man-crush.

  1. Chris Pratt for Gardner, but seeing him with the bowl haircut might be a little unsettling. He can be both a Marvel and a DC. Tyrese as Stewart, not really digging that, but who knows.
