*Oprah voice* YOU GET A SHARED UNIVERSE! YOU GET A SHARED UNIVERSE! EVERYBODY GETS A SHARED UNIVERSE!!!

Ever since Iron Man, Captain America and friends started showing up in each other’s movies to great success, Hollywood has found itself gripped by a shared universe fever. After several false starts and fumbles, DC\Warner Bros are getting their own foot in the shared universe door with Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice, which will feature not only the titular heroes, but also Wonder Woman, Cyborg and more! Fox also seems like they’re  doing– Well, actually I don’t know what they’re doing, but the crossover potential is there.

And now it looks like the folks at Universal want to be a part of this new cool club as well, only they’re bringing some monstrous members with them. According to Deadline, the studio has tapped writer/producers Alex Kurtzman and Chris Morgan to creat a new shared universe for their classic movie monster library, which includes Dracula, The Mummy, The Wolf Man, Frankenstein, Bride of Frankenstein and The Creature From the Black Lagoon.

Kurtzman – who most recently split amicably from his longtime writing partner Roberto Orci – has penned/produced such blockbusters as Transformers, Star Trek and The Amazing Spider-Man, while Morgan is a studio favourite who wrote and produced several installments in Universal’s biggest franchise, Fast and Furious. It’s uncertain whether Kurtzman and Morgan will be penning scripts or just producing, or even exactly which of the classic movie monsters they will be tackling, but the pair are apparently being referred as the “architects of this endeavour” whose duty it will be to “work closely with production, marketing, promotions and consumer product to support the revival” and “reevaluate projects which have preexisting attachments, and bring it under one cohesive strategy.”

This means that the upcoming reboot of The Mummy set for a 2016 release (which originally had Andres “Mama” Muschietti attached to helm, but is currently directorless), will actually be the first film to kick off this new shared universe. It’s uncertain if Jon Spaihts’ script for the reboot will still be used with just a few tweaks, or whether they will be redoing everything from the ground up.

It will be interesting to see just how much interconnectedness there will actually be between these various properties, and if/how they will crossover. Who knows, maybe Universal is taking a page out of Marvel’s book and we’ll see several individual monster movies leading up to that reboot of Shane Black’s Monster Squad we’ve all been waiting for.
