Some days I have to rack my brain to come up with a witty headline, and some days they just write themselves! And today is one of the latter as a new report has surfaced that claims Universal might be getting ready to unveil a female Mummy. Get it? Mummy… Mommy? Female? Aaaaahhh, forget about it! You guys don’t know how to appreciate a good bad pun!

Watch you hopefully haven’t forgotten though is that Universal decided recently to also get into the shared movie universe business and will be developing several films based on their stable of classic monster movies. We may or may not have already seen the first entry in Dracula Untold – the producers were a bit vague on whether the recent reboot was part of their plans, though it appeared that way – but we do know for fact that the next film that will “officially” kick everything off is their reboot of The Mummy. Famously portrayed by Boris Karloff in the classic 1930’s original and then again by Arnold Vosloo in the super-fun 1990’s remake, the titular bandaged monster has always been portrayed as male. But according to THR‘s sources, the gender of the monster in this latest version has yet to be determined.

Director Alex Kurtzman (Fringe, Star Trek, Transformers) and screenwriter Jon Spaihts (Prometheus) have apparently developed the movie in such a way that they could go either way on the gender divide for the character, with it all depending on which actor or actress shines in the casting process which is set to happen in the next few months. Kurtzman and Spaihts have apparently crafted two different versions of their story – both set in the modern day – with one catering to a female mummy and another to a male mummy. The movie is slated to be released on March 24, 2017, so there’s still some time work everything out, but it’s certainly an interesting approach to the whole project.

After The Mummy, Universal is expected to reveal an interconnected series of movies for Frankenstein, the Bride of Frankenstein, Dracula, the Wolf Man, the Invisible Man and more. According to recent comments from Kurtzman, who is also overseeing all of these movies with Chris Morgan (Fast & Furious franchise) – the universe will be more of a mashup of genres – action, adventure, suspense, thriller – but still retain certain classic horror elements.
