To paraphrase a famous Notorious BIG song: You’re nobody… until somebody… makes an unofficial sequel to the record breaking, critically acclaimed biopic about your life as a rap pioneer. Well, maybe that “nobody” part is a bit of an understatement as director F. Gary Gray’s hip hop biopic Straight Outta Compton has been cleaning up at the box office, already claiming $111 million in total and taking only 9 days to cross the $100 million mark – the fastest any movie directed by an African-American has ever done so. On top of that, the movie – which chronicles the rise and fall of trailblazing West Coast rap group NWA, whose members included Ice Cube, Dr Dre and the late Eazy-E – has had praises heaped on it by just about everybody who’s seen it.

So of course, people are going to want to latch onto that type of success, and the first contender has just arrived. According to TMZ, 90’s rapper and Dogg Pound member Daz is busy developing another hip hop biopic titled Dogg Pound 4 Life which will “pick up where N.W.A. left off — following the careers of Snoop Dogg, Nate Dogg, Kurupt, Daz and Warren G”. However Straight Outta Compton producers Dr. Dre and Ice Cube are not involved with this at all, and neither are Universal who developed Compton.

EW followed up with the studio who stated that “At this time there are no plans for a Straight Outta Compton sequel.” And while Daz told TMZ that Ice Cube gave his blessing for the production even though he wouldn’t be involved, Cube’s publicist told EW a different story, saying that no authorization was given.

Irrespective of whether Daz has the blessing of the powers that be or not though, he intends to go ahead, already revealing that he intends to have Dr. Dre’s son Curtis Young play his father on-screen, much like how Cube’s son, O’Shea Jackson, portrayed him (and apparently doing an incredible job of it). There’s no further mention of any of the other members of Compton‘s cast putting in appearances in Dogg Pound 4 Life or who will be playing the likes Snoop and Nate Dogg, but since NWA and the Dogg Pound were both such pivotal members of the 90’s hip hop scene and often collaborated with one another, there’s a lot of crossover of their stories.

There will be one major difference though. Straight Outta Compton has recently been in the spotlight for the wrong reasons after it was revealed that the script originally included a controversial moment in young Dr. Dre’s life in which he had a very violent altercation with a female reporter, which he subsequently boasted about in public. However, in the final film, that entire event is completely skipped over, which has drawn strong criticism from many parties for trying to sweep the darker side of the story under the rug.

According to Daz though, Dogg Pound 4 Life won’t be taking such a romanticized approach, saying that while the Dogg Pound’s music will be the focus of the movie, it “won’t whitewash gang violence and its impact on the rap industry.” Also included in the story will be controversial music mogul Suge Knight, who was arrested on charges of murder and attempted murder earlier in the year. Although TMZ reports that producers of the movie won’t be working with him.

Well, that’s if this “unofficial” sequel actually gets made.
