Upgrade your gang and twins in Assassin’s Creed Syndicate

Assassins creed syndicate evie combat

I remember recruiting my favourite assassins in Assassin’s Creed Brotherhood. I had one lady assassin who was so strong, I’d send her on all sorts of missions and she was always the best. I even kitted her out with a special hood so I could spot her when I’d call for reinforcements in combat. While I enjoy leveling my own character, there’s something special about having a posse to nurture and grow. Assassin’s Creed Syndicate seems to be bringing back that feeling.

While we need to wait to learn more about the specific opportunities related to the Rooks, we do know that they are your gang that you use to take over the city. However, they can also be customized. Just knowing that made me far too happy. Here is a bit more detail from the UbiBlog:

On top of gear and personal upgrades, you can use crafting resources to upgrade your gang. Use resources to get discounts on items, bribe the police, sabotage the Templar’s carriages and weapons, make your Rooks stronger, and much more.

Just check out the gang upgrade skill tree.

Of course the gang’s upgrade pathing won’t be the only skill tree in the game. there’s a ton of customization available for players to make Jacob and Evie their own. Beyond putting them in unique outfits, check out the skill tree for Jacob.

Stealth and Combat skills include combo boosts, lock picking and health upgrades while ecosystem upgrades affect things like Eagle Vision, carriages and your gang. While the trees will be pretty much the same for Jacob and Evie – they can both handle guns and knives – they each have unique skills. Jacob’s unique skills are:

  • Gunslinger II – Jacob and Evie are both skilled with their guns, but with the Gunslinger II skill, all of Jacob’s Countershots are automatic headshots.
  • Defense III – Both Jacob and Evie are good at defending themselves (both can unlock Defense I, which decreases damage taken from melee hits, and Defense II, which decreases damage taken from ranged hits) but when you unlock the Defense III skill, Jacob will take much less damage overall.
  • Mutilate II – An upgrade on the Mutilate skill (which both twins have access to), Mutilate II helps Jacob bring his enemies into a near death state much more quickly. This is especially helpful when setting up brutal multi-kills.

Whereas Evie has these unique skills:

  • Chameleon – Evie is a master of blending in with her environment. While in Sneak Mode, she will be nearly undetectable when she stands completely still. Only enemies very close to her will be able to spot her.
  • Knife Master II – Both twins can unlock the Knife Master I skill, but only Evie can take it to the next level. She will be able to carry twice as many throwing knives, and they will inflict quite a bit more damage.
  • Stealth III – The final level of Stealth (both twins can access Stealth I and II), Stealth III increases Evie’s Stealth stat by an additional 11. She is far less likely to be detected and everything she does – including assassinations – make very little noise.

I love all these upgrade options. They are actually making me a bit too excited for the game now. I know previous iterations in the franchise also let you customize your characters, but doing so never really seemed to change anything. Besides, by middle of the game I usually had such over-powered gear that it didn’t matter. But now, with possible upgrades to my gang, I feel like there is more reason to actually spend my crafting resources. Then again, there seem to be five types of currency again – I’m sure it will make sense once I’m in the game, but it’s always so off-putting when I see it in screen grabs.

Oh, and yes, I also see the button for “get crafting resources” which obviously means that there will be microtransactions in the game. But I don’t totally mind them in this case. For those who want to just play the game and acquire resources normally, this element will be totally ignored. But for those who are lazy, or don’t like to open every chest or don’t want to struggle to find resources, they can upgrade their crafting and gang using real world money; it’s all single player anyway, so it’s not like their choice to spend money will impact on my gameplay experience.
