I know it’s only Tuesday, but it would appear that WTF is arriving early this week. THR is reporting that Leonardo DiCaprio and his Appian Way production company are teaming up with Paramount to produce a live-action feature film adaptation of classic 90’s cartoon Captain Planet!

The original cartoon series was produced by Turner Broadcasting and debuted in 1990. It followed five environmentally minded kids from different parts of the world, who all receive magical rings, with each controlling a different element of nature: Kwame from Ghana got the power of Earth, Wheeler from New York got the power of Fire, Linka from Russia got the power of Wind, Gi from Thailand got the power of Water, and Ma-Ti from the Amazon got the power to become an internet meme with his ability to control the pretty lame Heart.

When these five “Planeteers” combined their powers though, they were able to summon up Captain Planet, a blue-skinned, mullet-wearing superhero who was the chosen champion of Gaia, the spirit of the Earth. Captain Planet and the Planeteers would go on weekly adventures, tackling all kinds of villains who were out to destroy the environment. And also get a really catchy theme song stuck in your head.

Things are still in their infancy on this production, with no directors or stars attached. However, the studio has tapped Jono Matt and Glenn Powell to write the script. While Matt is relative unknown, having mainly been an assistant on a couple of big productions, Powell has been an actor in some relatively decent productions like The Expendables 3, Everybody Wants Some and most recently as a series regular on Scream Queens. At this point though its uncertain if Powell, will just be scripting or whether he will also appear in front of the camera.

What is intriguing though is that Powell and Matt are apparently intending to offer a “subversive take” on the material, making this more of a sequel and adaptation. According to THR’s source, “the story takes place years after the adventures of the show, with the Captain now a washed-up has-been who needs the kids more than they need him.” I guess that green mullet is now going to look even sadder.

DiCaprio has been an outspoken environmentalist for many years, so it really shouldn’t be too surprising that he would be backing such an environmentally focused project. Now if only DiCaprio can use his star power to convince Don Cheadle to once again reprise the role of Captain Planet from those hilarious/twisted Funny Or Die shorts.
