Watch Frank Grillo and Iko Uwais fight aliens in the trailer for Beyond Skyline

Way back in 2010 there was a little movie that could called Skyline. Directed by the brotherly team of Colin and Greg Strause, the guys behind Alien vs Predator: Requiem (which Darryn insists is the best Predator movie in between bouts of huffing paint fumes), Skyline grabbed attention for being shot on a shoestring budget of just $10 million, but boasting A-list visual effects. As the brothers Strause had actually started their careers as VFX guys on some major Hollywood productions, this wasn’t the biggest surprise. What caught everybody unawares was just how much money Skyline made, eventually earning just shy of $80 million at the box office. That is some profit margin.

What caught everybody unawares was just how much money Skyline made, eventually earning just shy of $80 million at the box office. That is some profit margin.Unfortunately, there was just the slight little problem of the movie being downright terrible, and once word of mouth got around its earnings dried up quickly enough. I’m guessing that stink still lingered in the air which is why its taken seven years for a follow-up movie to be made, but now Beyond Skyline is finally here. And I’ll be damned if I don’t actually want to watch it!

There are two main reasons for my enthusiasm though: Frank Grillo and Iko Uwais. The latter is breakout Indonesian martial arts star of the two The Raid movies, while Grillo is an always dependable cinematic badass who has proven his action hero credentials many times over features like The Purge: Anarchy, Captain America: Winter Soldier and TV series Kingdom. Coincidentally he was actually tapped to lead an English-language remake of The Raid, playing Uwais’ role, before that production fell apart.

I guess the two actors got in contact then and decided to work together, and good for them because Beyond Skyline looks it could be fun. Now please note: I said fun not good. This is brainless Friday night action movie material. I don’t expect much of anything from it, but how can I say no to a movie where Iko Uwais is Silat-ing the hell out of an alien warrior in glowing blue armour, or Frank Grillo is chased through temple-filled jungles by what appears to be a video game end level boss?

Set concurrently with the previous Skyline film but in a different undisclosed location during the worldwide alien invasion, Mark, a tough-as-nails detective, embarks on a relentless pursuit to free his son, Trent, from a nightmarish alien warship

While the Strause brothers have handed over the directors chair to newcomer Liam O’Donnell, I have to say that this still looks very good from a visuals standpoint. And really, that’s all I’m aiming for here.

Beyond Skyline – which is R-rated now instead of the original’s PG-13 – also stars Grillo’s Captain America: Winter Solder co-star Callan Mulvey and Uwais’ The Raid co-star Yayan Ruhian as well as a bunch of other people you’ve almost certainly never heard of before. There’s no scheduled release date yet, but there are a bunch of official stills from the film.

I really enjoyed the first movie. The third act was nonsensical as all hell, but it was still enjoyable.

    Keen for this one.
