Taken was easily the biggest and most pleasantly badass surprise of 2008. With zero hype leading up to it, and a leading man that was just getting ready to settle down to a life of prune juice and orthopedic slippers, it came out of nowhere to completely shoot the kneecaps off anybody that saw it.
And yet, I’ll be honest, when I first heard that they were making a sequel, I had to ask “Why?”
Now I know why: So that Liam Neeson can kick the asses of Borris the Bullet Dodger’s entire family!
While the recreation of the cellphone conversation scene from the original does come across a bit forced in this trailer, everything else seems to be right on cue. Neeson’s Bryan Mills is still a one-man Albanian gangster wrecking crew, laying the retired CIA smack down on anybody dumb enough to lay hands on any lady in his life.
And I have no idea how I previously missed out on Rade Serbedzija’s involvement as the head of the Albanian family out for vengeance. “He slaughtered our men, our brothers, our sons. We’ll find him. We will have our revenge”, he utters in his gravelly non-specific Eastern European accent. Oh Rade, you don’t know how much your day is about to suck.
Synopsis:
Liam Neeson returns as Bryan Mills, the retired CIA agent with a particular set of skills who stopped at nothing to save his daughter Kim from Albanian kidnappers. When the father of one of the kidnappers swears revenge and takes Bryan and his wife hostage during their family vacation in Istanbul, Bryan enlists Kim to help them escape, and uses the same advanced level of special forces tactics to get his family to safety and systematically take out the kidnappers one by one.

I’m on the fence. It has potential, but if the movie tries to be too slick – in other words, it forgets how it became such a big hit – it could fall apart.

I understand your concerns completely. There’s simply just not enough protracted sequences in that trailer to truly judge if Olivier Megaton has managed to capture the essence of the first film.
