With the retirement of Hayao Miyazaki, fans have been worried about the future of Studio Ghibli. It’s not unjustified – Miyazaki is responsbile for practically all of the studio’s big hits. Well, almost all – Ghibli co-founder Isao Takahata has returned to the director’s chair for The Tale Of Princess Kaguya. It was released in Japan last year to great critical acclaim, but not quite the usual earnings the studio is used to. Now the film is headed to the West with this English-version, of which the trailer had just been released:

As mentioned, The Tale Of Princess Kaguya did not do as well as hoped, perhaps because it is rather stylised. That is unlikely to lure mainstream audiences out to see it, but on the other hand it is nice seeing Ghibli do this kind of thing again. The last I can recall was My Neighbors the Yamadas, also directed by Takahata. But I like that kind of thing and think that Princess Kaguya looks incredible. It also contains brief nudity, which at least one critic thinks might limit appeal in the U.S. Personally I hope it is just a bit more engaging than Ghibli’s last release, The Secret World Of Arrietty.

Here’s the breakdown on the dubbed release, courtesy of IndieWire:

Originally released in 2013,  Isao Takahata (“The Grave of the Fireflys”) directed and co-wrote the film, and this marks the legendary animator’s first solo helming effort since 1999. A retelling of the folktale “The Tale of the Bamboo Cutter,” the film tells the story of a magical princess, Kaguya, who is discovered inside a stalk of bamboo, and traces her life from infancy to adulthood in the human world.

After its initial release in Japan, where it earned a ton of money and awards and acclaim, the U.S. distribution rights for ‘Princess Kaguya’ were picked up by GKIDS, and they set about working on a new English dub. They put together a cast full of recognizable names, including Chloe Grace Moretz, James Caan, Mary Steenburgen, Darren Criss, Lucy Liu, Beau Bridges, Daniel Dae Kim, James Marsden, Oliver Platt, John Cho, George Segal and Dean Cain.

The Tale Of Princess Kaguya is set for a mid-October release in the U.S.
