Warner Bros has picked their Justice League director and he's a bit of a daredevil

Well I certainly did not see this one coming. While Marvel and Disney had made big news just two days ago by announcing Joss Whedon’s return to write and direct the next Avengers film, Warner Bros and DC may just have stolen some of that limelight with an announcement for their own superhero ensemble mega-film.

Coming completely out of nowhere, news has broke that Warner Bros has offered Will Beal’s Justice League screenplay to just a single director: Ben Affleck.

This will of course not be the Oscar wining actor/director’s first superhero dance, having played the title role in 2003’s Daredevil, as well as playing George Reeves, the real life actor who played Superman in the 1950’s TV series, in the biographical drama Hollywoodland, which netted him a Golden Globe nomination.

Affleck – who has emphatically proven not only his dramatic directorial skills but also his ability to handle ensemble casts with the critically acclaimed Gone Baby Gone and The Town  –  is set to meet with WB brass in the next few days to discuss the film, which according to Variety, would see a team-up between Batman, Superman, Green Lantern, Wonder Woman and Flash. And here’s the kicker: Affleck may just be showing up both behind and in front of the camera, as he is reportedly considering starring in one of the pivotal roles.

Zack Snyder has hinted that his Man of Steel may just be the jumping off point for Justice League, which would mean that Henry Cavill would probably reprise his role as Superman, and while the Green Lantern may have been an emerald turd of a film, Ryan Reynolds was pretty favourably received in the title role by most people, so he might just be back in the jade jumpsuit again. That just leaves Flash and Batman, and while he is certainly not a match physically and personality-wise for the Scarlet Speedster, I could definitely see him donning the black cape and cowl as Batman.

The only problem is that after finishing work on Mark Steven Johnson’s Daredevil, Affleck proclaimed that he’d never do another superhero movie again:

“No, I would not do another[‘Daredevil’] was not that much fun … and it’s not something I’m particularly looking to go through again.”

He already flirted with going against that statement not too long ago, as Warner Bros offered him the director’s chair on Man of Steel, before giving it to Zack Snyder after Affleck turned down the project down. At the time, Affleck mentioned that there were lots more people in front of him who could do “epic effects movies”. Well, that doesn’t seem to be the case now.

So what do you guys think of Affleck helming what could easily become the biggest film in Warner Bros’ history, and the fact that he might just be suiting up in front of the camera as well?
