And the McConaissance continues….

An adaptation of Stephen King’s acclaimed post apocalyptic novel The Stand has been in the works for a while now in some form or another, with the latest attempt being Warner Bros’ feature film effort directed by Fault In Our Stars‘ Josh Boone. And according to Deadline, WB and Boone want Matthew McConaughey for the role of Randall Flagg.

King first introduced Flagg in his 1978 novel “The Stand”, where he was portrayed as “a demonic figure who wreaks havoc after a plague kills most of the population”, but the character then went on to appear in another eight of King’s works, most famously as the main antagonist the epic “The Dark Tower” series (which is also still in development – can somebody say crossover?). Flagg is a powerful sorcerer and necromancer, revealed to be in service of the Outer Dark, whose entire game plan seems to be the fall of human society. He gets a helping hand with that in The Stand, when a weaponized strain of influenza escapes a military base and kills off most of the global population, leaving a world in ruins.

The Stand was already adapted as a miniseries back in the mid-90’s, wherein Jamey Sheridan played the role of Flagg. But this new adaptation will definitely be aiming for a higher profile.

While nothing between WB and McConaughey is official yet, he is a superb pick to play the dark and twisted Flagg. He just showed us a taste of that dark and twisted side as Rust Cohle in True Detective –  which he more than likely will be picking up an Emmy for later tonight – and when he it comes to the thought of that type of darkness coupled with some demonic edge, there’s only one thing I have to say (and which I will borrow from McConaughey himself): Alright! Alright! Alriiiiight!

Now the big question just remains, will he have the same mullet from hell as Sheridan did in the miniseries?

They should rather make this a mini series.
