While you won’t see Batman slugging it out with Superman next year, that doesn’t mean that 2014 won’t have your annual dose of caped crusader in it. Marvel may be owning DC when it comes to live action films, but the Disney owned company still has plenty to learn when it comes to making animated films based on their various characters.

DC and Warner Bros knows how to get the best story out onto a smaller screen with the best animation teams, and it looks like their next flick will be examining Batman and his terrible parenting skills.

The upcoming animated movie Son of Batman introduces Damian, the child Bruce Wayne never knew he had. The story is based on a 2006 comic-book arc written by Grant Morrison in which Batman learns that he has a violent, unruly pre-teen son, secretly raised by the terrorist group the League of Assassins.

Based on the Grant Morrison and Andy Kubert storyline that saw the dark knight meet his own son for the very first time, Son of Batman takes the hero on a globe-trotting quest that features the Ghul family, Deathstroke and ninja Man-Bats. Yes, ninja Man-Bats. Judging by the trailer above, it’s clear that this story isn’t being adapted panel for panel but I’m more than ok with that because it’s Batman vs ninja Man-Bats. I cannot stress that enough.

Son of Batman is still quite a few months off however, but you’ll see more of the pointy-eared fellow next month in Justice League: War. That one arrives on VOD and Blu-Ray on February 4, and includes a sneak peak at the next DC animated film.

Son of Batman stars Jason O’Mara as the voice of Batman/Bruce Wayne, Stuart Allan as Damian, Morena Baccarin as Talia Al Ghul Giancarlo Esposito as Ra’s Al Ghul, David McCallum as Alfred Pennyworth, Xander Berkeley as Kirk Langstrom (aka Man-Bat), and Thomas Gibson as Deathstroke.
