We need to talk about Lynne Ramsay's Moby Dick in space

Well you have to give it to Lynne Ramsay, she certainly isn’t one to be easily categorized by genre. The award winning and film festival darling director began her career making moving human dramas like Ratcatcher and Morvern Callar, segued nicely into this year’s thriller We Need To Talk About Kevin and will be directing Natalie Portman and Michael Fassbender next in the western Jane’s Got a Gun.

It seems that all that’s missing from that resume would be some kind of classic period piece, or maybe a sci-fi jaunt. Hey, why not just do ’em both at the same time?!

Heat Vision reports that along with her Kevin co-writer and spouse Rory Kinnear, Ramsay will be writing and directing Mobius, which transplants Herman Mellville’s classic novel Moby Dick from the oceans of 19th century Earth to far future deep space.

While plot details are being kept a bit under wraps at the moment, the film is being billed as a “psychological action thriller set in deep space, [where] a captain consumed by revenge takes his crew on a death mission fueled by his own ego and will to control an enigmatic alien.”

While the form of said alien could certainly be just about anything, as a die-hard Doctor Who fan, I am hoping for some space-whale. And considering Ramsay’s flair for surreal visuals, this could certainly be an interesting looking space adventure.

The film is receiving financial backing from Scott Pictures, the same group throwing their money behind Jane’s Got a Gun, so here’s hoping they keep the crew together and maybe have Michael Fassbender as space-Ahab? It wouldn’t be the first time he plays a character with a really big harpoon.
