There is a lot of change underway for season 2 of Supergirl. Not only is the show switching from CBS to CW, which align it to fellow DC Comic superheroes  Arrow, The Flash, and Legends of Tomorrow that also appear on the network. The show will also be introducing a whole host of new characters as well including Kara Danvers (Supergirl’s earth name)’ new boss, Snapper Carr (Ian Gomez), Lex Luthor’s sister Lena (Katie McGrath), NCPD agent Maggie Sawyer (Floriana Lima),Daxamite Mon-El (Chris Wood), and Miss Martian (Sharon Leal).

Still, perhaps the most anticipated character to join Supergirl (Melissa Benoist) in season 2 will be her cousin, Clark Kent, née Kal-El, a.k.a. Superman (Tyler Hoechlin). And that’s the new appearance which is rightfully getting all the attention in the new season and which CW hopes will be the big draw card for the new season. It was inevitable that they would eventually try and bring the two characters together somehow, it was always going to be a matter of what brings them together and similarly, why we haven’t seen Superman yet up to this point.

And in a recent interview with TVLine, the series showrunner Andrew Kreisberg reveal the reason the two heroes will be teaming up early in the season:

The sinister Project Cadmus, teased in Season 1, targets the Kryptonian cousins, triggering “a chain of events that forces Supergirl and Superman to team up.

Project Cadmus is a secret government research lab tied to the DEO that experimented on extraterrestrials, which is why Superman didn’t work with the agency. Now he didn’t reveal what or how exactly they will target the pair, but it will obviously require the two to work together to overcome this adversary. That Supergirl actually works for DEO as her alter-ego, will make it all the more complex.

Alongside this common purpose, Kreisberg also teased the kind of dynamic we can expect from this pairing in the new season:

They get to spend some time in each other’s lives, which they haven’t previously gotten to do. [Clark teaches Kara how to] integrate both parts of her life into one.

So, with Supergirl still struggling to manage her duel identify from season 1, we will see Superman play more of a mentoring role to his younger cousin in helping her to adapt to the challenges of being  hero, while also trying to live a normal life. Most of us desire Superhero skills to get through our days, yet all they want to do is live a normal life.

Other snippets that were teased in the interview include (*SPOILERS ALERT*) the matter of the crash-landed space pod’s passenger, Mon-El of Daxam, who is poised to be both friend and foe. While Lena Luthor (who in the wake of brother Lex’s incarceration “is trying to change the face of her company,” starting with a rebranding as LCorp). Additionally Winn is actually going to get fired and go work for the DEO. It certainly is shaping up to be a different season for Supergirl with a lot going on. Exactly what the middling show needed.

Supergirl premiers Oct 10, on CW.
