Weekend Box Office Report – Stephen King’s It has a massive record-breaking debut

Officially the American summer season ended last week, but it only got hot this weekend past. That’s at least when it comes to the US box office which had been experiencing the most disappointing numbers in nearly two decades over the last few months. That crippling slump is most definitely over though thanks to director Andres Muschietti’s new adaptation of Stephen King’s It which has blown away expectations with a record-breaking debut this weekend past.

It already scared its way into the record books on Thursday when it earned $13.5 million in the US, giving the largest Thursday preview screening total for a horror movie, an R-rated movie and a September release. The hotly-anticipated horror film continued its success on its official debut day as it posted the biggest Friday opening for a September release with a huge $51 million that’s only $2 million short of the entire combined income of the previous weekend’s lineup.

It’s Thursday and Friday totals combined already eclipsed Paranormal Activity 3’s $52.7 million largest weekend opening for an R-rated horror movie by a long shot, and eventually ended off the weekend on a monstrous $117. That leaves It as the second biggest domestic opening weekend of all time for an R-rated film, bested only by Deadpool’s $132 million (and the Merc With the Mouth had the benefit of opening on a 4-day holiday weekend). On the international front, It actually broke that record in several of the markets in which it opened. In total it earned $62 million from 46 markets, the largest international opening ever for a horror film.

A sequel to It: Part 1 – The Loser’s Club has already been greenlit, and New Line must be smiling ear to ear right now as the film’s early critical praise has now also been matched by commercial success. In total, It has made $179 million worldwide off just a budget of $35 million. Sorry, professional clowns, but it appears that people love getting scared by your demonic counterparts after all.

As for the rest of the US box office, the only other newcomer on the charts is the Reese Witherspoon romantic drama Home Again, which seems to be offering itself as the alternative for cinemagoers who actually want to have a peaceful sleep. The film pretty much came in as predicted earning $9 million on debut to take second place.

Let’s see what the rest of the US box office chart looks like:

I want an idle hands remake. Kids need to know how to do dark humour right.

Totally agree. The humour these days is lame! Okay, not really, we have Rick and Morty!

Personally, I cannot truly understand the genre of Horror and related movies.

I simply cannot understand why people would watch things like that.. I watch a tiny part, my imagination goes into overdrive, sometimes weeks later and I cannot get those disturbing images out of my head. (disclaimer, I watched the IT miniseries as a child. It was BAAAD (well, some of the IT clown jokes were quite funny). My mother, however, made watch the final episode with her, which was a good thing)

No, most certainly not for me. Call me a sissy, do not care. We all have different things that make us tick and that we enjoy.

I used to hate horrors. Like, all the way through primary school and high school. When I was 11, some friends of mine wanted to watch The Fly. I was so poep scared, I told them my parents don’t want me watching things like that.
But then, suddenly when I was older, the sheer rush one gets when a frightful thing happens on screen, man, it hooked me. My wife laughs at me every time I scream out loud.

And yeah, those images stay with me as well. I also remember being scared shitless when I watched IT years ago. Watching the original Poltergeist movie, etc. Nightmares for weeks.

I still get the nightmares. But these days I tend to use them for my own purposes.

Neurologically, everybody is different. Certain images, sounds and implications will trigger different neurons in different people’s brains. Hence some would find pleasure in it and some wouldn’t.

      Psychologically, you’re a sissy.

Not caring what you’re called is a trait of psychopathy/sociopathy.

lol i’m kidding, you’re not a sissy. It’s just a preference. Sometimes we can shift between preferences. I never used to watch horror movies until recently. But they’re fun these days, when looked at from an anthropological perspective.

      Every played a horror game?

Actually… When you think about it.. What if horror movies are a medium of distracting the masses from the true horror of our world, ie: governments..??

Hi, yeah, sissy. “Psychologically, you’re a sissy.” – had a good laugh, thanks

I played Doom 3 for about 30 hours many years back, say 2004 ish. And that is about it.

Will admit to reading some books that sort of touched on horror / fantasy. Some of the images stuck with me a long long time, images I made in my mind from reading the books.
