In any other year, the plot for upcoming film Desierto would’ve made for a decent, but straightforward horror thriller. But in a US election year where immigration has been a hot topic, this film suddenly has a lot more political undertones that will probably make it deeper than your average horror film.

But average is not something that this film is looking to strive for. Produced by Alfonso Cuarón (director of Gravity) and directed by his son Jonás Cuarón, this pair are known for most of their films tending to be incredibly smart and visually quite visceral too. And based on this new trailer, Desierto appears to be no different.

The story takes aim at Mexican border crossers seeking a better life, led by Moises, played by Gael García Bernal who land up in frantic cat and mouse survival game when they are pursued by a deranged vigilante played by Jeffrey Dean Morgan, who seems truly carnal in this.

There is little dialogue in this trailer, so difficult to see whether the film will have a deep story or rely mostly on action set-pieces. But what is seen in the trailer certainly looks worthwhile. The film is described as a horror, though comes across more as an action thriller in the trailer, but with a tight, claustrophobic tension. Almost akin to Gravity, if you can swap out the space for the desert and replace all the space debris for a mad-man with a gun. It’s a stretch I know, but it’s that similar tension which I felt while watching the trailer.

Desierto hits US theaters on October 14. You can view the official synopsis below:

What begins as a hopeful journey to seek a better life becomes a harrowing and primal fight for survival when a deranged, rifle-toting vigilante chases a group of unarmed men and women through the treacherous U.S.-Mexican border. In the harsh, unforgiving desert terrain, the odds are stacked firmly against them as they continuously discover there’s nowhere to hide from the unrelenting, merciless killer.
