Will Drew Struzan return for STAR WARS EPISODE VII?

If you’re going to make a Star Wars movie, there’s a few things that you have to include. Lightsabers that make that VMMMMMM sound. Characters expressing their bad sense feelings. Yoda being verbally dyslexic. But above all else, you need a brand spankin’ new poster from the legend himself, Drew Struzan, for your new Star Wars experience.

The poster artist who designed the original trilogy of A1 cinematic sheets, and then returned for a second tour of duty with the prequel trilogy, has been approached to lend his creatove talents to a new set of posters for the now Disney-owned Star Wars brand. Y’know, despite the fact that he happens to be retired right now.

“Oh my god, I’m trying to be retired!” Struzan said to Fanhattan. “You know, I spent 35 years painting ‘Star Wars’. I painted ‘Star Wars’ before most of you were born!”

But I guess there is always a chance. There’s no intention. But I would love to have a day off every now and again, and I have to work a weekend and all through the night. If the opportunity arises, it will be a real temptation. But it’s going to have to be a real temptation to get me away from my wife and my little grandkids and my family. Away from the green trees and the blue skies for a change instead of just locked in the studio. But, you know, never say never. All things are possible.

I’ve always been a huge fan of Struzan and his artistic genius. The man can make even the most mundane movie amazing thanks to his promotional painting wizardry  and he’s just as important to Star Wars as Darth Vader is to leather fetishists.

Star Wars Episode VII still needs to find a director, but it is scheduled to release in 2015. And I’m hoping that the cinema that I watch it at has a piece of Struzan art attached to the right hall number.

Why? Have you not seen what Disney has done for Marvel? Avengers was excellent!

It will be good I’m sure, and yes the Avengers was very good, but this is Star Wars, a space opera. I’m just a little concerned about what direction they will take it in and whether they will be able to pull it off. Not that Lucas has always done the right thing, e.g. the clone wars animated atrocity…

The problem was George Lucas. He was just doing whatever the hell he wanted, results be damned. The fact that Disney have so far reached out to people who are Star Wars fanboys/girls themselves has been extremely comforting to me.

Also if you are a very big fan of the episodes, which I am unfortunately, it is quite likely that you wont like the end result if they do end up changing the ‘feel’ of the universe too much. Look at the backlash episode 1 got from the big fanboys of the original trilogy. I only came in at episode 1 so I’m lucky in that I love all six of the films. The problem is being too serious of a fan – then you cant be pleased 😛

This would be so awesome if it comes to pass. I’ve got Drew’s Hellboy instructional DVD and I’d love to see the techniques I’ve learned from him in the next Star Wars posters. He’s the best!
