Holmes and Watson

Chad Smith Will Ferrell and John C. Reilly really do seem like a perfect match, from an acting point of view (don’t get either ideas.) They had success with Talladega Nights and more recent Step Brothers and now they are looking to star in another movie together. The two are set to star in another adaptation of the Sherlock Holmes story, titled Holmes and Watson and will be directed by Etan Cohen. Ferrell will play the role of Holmes and Reilly will be playing his wingman Watson.

I’m not sure what it is that makes these two such an interesting acting pair. They both have similar humour and comedic talents, but it’s the way they balance each other out in execution that I think makes things work. Ferrell is a lot louder and more dramatic in his delivery, whereas Reilly is a lot more subtle and quiet, but still equally capable of bringing out a laugh – especially in the more serious moments. I have found these two a little silly at times and their humour is not for everyone, but the chemistry between the two is still appealing.

According to Deadline, the studio was initially looking to bring Sasha Baron Cohen in to star alongside Ferrell, but when this didn’t work out they jumped to secure Reilly instead.

Sherlock Holmes is certainly a popular character at the moment and this is one of several recent adaptations of the popular characters. We’ve had the Guy Ritchie-directed Sherlock Holmes franchise with Robert Downey Jr and Jude Law, the CBS series Elementary with Jonny Lee Miller and Lucy Liu and then the Benedict Cumberbatch series Sherlock.

All those however, took a more serious approach to the crime solving par whereas Holmes and Watson will undoubtedly look to provide a more comical angle to the pair. The plan though is to keep this film PG-13 like their last two collaborations, which I actually like as it will hopefully mean the film can actually run on good gags and not just vulgarity, which Hollywood mistakes for funny too often in their R-rated comedies.

This is still early days in the production and so no production or release dates have yet been set. When it does, don’t expect Will Ferrell to keep quiet about it.
