It’s the start of a New Year, so you know what that means. Yes, it’s time for new beginnings and new promises that you can’t deliver upon and all that hogwash. It also means that it is time for everyone who thinks they have a say about the movie industry to start handing out awards simply because they can. Thankfully, not all awards shows are equal. So while every Tom, Dick and Harry is giving out their awards, we can at least focus on the select few that mean something in an industry that already has far too many of them.

Obviously, we’ve already revealed our favourite movies of 2017, which should be the only list you care about, but if you want to know the best of the rest and also find out who are the best actors and directors across both movies and television, then a good place to start is the awards handed out by the Hollywood Foreign Press Association, which is surprisingly still called the Golden Globes after a tumultuous 2017 in the industry for all the wrong reasons.

As for the results themselves, on the movie front its a little difficult to judge the merits considering most of the top films haven’t reached our shores yet. At least it means we have something to look forward to in the cinemas over the next few months. The only winner on this list that I can attest to being a deserving winner is Pixar’s Coco, which was far and away the best animated movie of last year. We’ve had more exposure to all of the TV series that were up for nomination, but I guess these awards were another reminder that I’ve yet to actually watch The Handmaid’s Tale. I guess I better start soon because according to these award shows, it’s really good.

As the industry builds up to its ultimate behemoth, the Academy Awards, the Golden Globes perhaps give one of the biggest indications of who could be in line for a potential Oscar. Obviously, success here is no guarantee that the Academy will agree with the Hollywood Foreign Press Association, but at least it’s fun to speculate.

What do you make of this year’s awards?
