WITCHER movie and series in development

Be still my beating heart, Geralt and his shenanigans will be coming to the big screen sometime in 2017 and I am bursting with excitement, and fear. Fear they will cock it up… Let’s pretend they won’t and remember that although there is a curse placed on movies based on games this is in fact a movie based on the stories of Andrzej Sapkowski, which are awesome (I am told *hangs head in shame).

I am currently about 100 hours into The Witcher III and if even 10% of that could make it to a movie I would be a very happy fan. Of course the stories of our intrepid Witcher have been made ultra famous by  Polish based, and fan-loved, CD Project Red, a company who know how to treat solid material with respect. I truly hope that the Sean Daniel Company can do the same. I mean they made The Mummy: Tomb of the Dragon Emperor, which sucked and are also planning on remaking classic film history’s Ben-Hur. A ballsy move that I wouldn’t dream of doing. Let’s hope that their partner in production Platige Films will help steer the project to a true course.

Good news, nay, most excellent news, is that Tomasz Bagiński (Academy Award nominated for The Cathedral) will direct. Avid fans will be familiar with the name as he directed the opening scenes of the first two games; I am heartened to hear they are not picking some random person but instead someone who has shown passion for the lore. The other good news is that the movie is said to be the start of many and will also launch a television series. How much more awesome can one person take in a day, oh, it’s Friday, squee!

I suppose I do have to mention that this isn’t the first time that The Witcher has been made into a movie. There was a 2001 attempt called The Hexer (The Witcher in English). The movie… Well, let’s say it wasn’t well received. Once writer Sapkowski said of it “I can answer only with a single word, an obscene, albeit a short one.” Ouch. So, let’s hope this time round they get it right. I dare say there is a fat pay cheque at the end if they do.

Now. More importantly, who should play Geralt? In my opinion there is no contest. Mads Mikkelsen! I mean have a look at this fan-fiction image below and try and disagree with me!
