WWE Smackdown LIVE took place from the Verizon Arena in North Little Rock, Arkansas this week. Here’s all the action that went down.

Jinder Mahal and Rusev got into a wild brawl with Randy Orton and Shinsuke Nakamura

Smackdown August 29 (2)

As WWE Champ, Jinder Mahal believes that he’s owed some respect in the ring, a point that he wanted to make clear to his upcoming opponents in the main event tag team match, Randy Orton and Shinsuke Nakamura. One person who wasn’t ready to bend the knee to the modern-day maharaja? Shinsuke Nakamura, who decided to give Mahal a piece of his mind.

With Orton joining him to even the numbers game that Mahal usually played with the Singh Brothers, the brouhaha looked evenly paced. Until Rusev entered the fray that is, sending the King of Strong Style and the Apex Predator packing.

Shelton Benjamin and Chad Gable def. The Ascension

Smackdown August 29 (3)

Could this be the revival of the world’s greatest tag team, it certainly seemed so as the return of Shelton Benjamin and his pairing up with Chad Gable made for a thrilling debut against the Ascension that left Viktor down for the count after eating a perfectly executed Gold Standard from the new team.

United States Champion AJ Styles def. Tye Dillinger

Smackdown August 29 (4)

With AJ Styles once again the United States champion, it was time to revive an old favourite on Smackdown LIVE: The US Open Challenge. The first superstar eager to attempt to win the gold off of Styles? None other than Tye Dillinger, who enthusiastically appeared to answer the call…and got blindsided by Baron Corbin.

Dillinger recovered quicly however, repaying Corbin in kind and ejecting him from the ring so that he could start the match properly, but the perfect 10 fell to a Calf-Crusher from the champ that had him quickly tapping out. Corbin returned, knocked out Dillinger again and quickly found himself removed from the ring again, this time by Styles. The lone wolf isn’t having a good day.

Bobby Roode def. Mike Kanellis

Smackdown August 29 (5)

Well here was a most satisfying squash match, as Bobby Roode used the most glorious of DDTs to put Mike Kanellis down for the three-count. How Roode.

Kevin Owens and Shane McMahon got into a war of words prior to Aiden English def. Sami Zayn

Smackdown August 29 (6)

This one was weird. After a monumental whinge-fest, Kevin Owens and his perceived slights decided to intefere in Sami Zayn and Aiden English’s match. Knocking out the ref and assuming the role of official himself with the magical powers bestowed upon him by the striped shirt, Owens hit a Pop-Up Powerbomb on Zayn and gave English the three-count. A match decision that Smackdown LIVE boss Shane McMahon would eventually overrule of course.

The Usos def. The New Day allowing themselves to choose the stipulation for the SmackDown Tag Team Championship Rematch

Smackdown August 29 (7)

A solid back and forth match here, as The Usos proved themselves worthy of being tag team champions again ahead of the upcoming rematch for the titles that The New Day are owed. After catching Kofi Kingston with a roll-up via a blind tag, the Usos were in a dominant position as they could decide on what kind of match they wanted to have in their title defense. Their choice?

That’s a stipulation which will most likely be revealed next week.

Tamina def. local competitor

Smackdown August 29 (8)

SQUASH MATCH! Tamina took down local Arkansas talent so quickly, that the plucky challenger never even had time for her name to be remembered.

Shinsuke Nakamura and Randy Orton def. Jinder Mahal and Rusev

Smackdown August 29 (1)

Main event time, and with the numbers evened out it looked like the night would belong to Randy Orton and Shinsuke Nakamura. The team put up a tremendous effort against WWE champ Jinder Mahal and Rusev, shaking off any dastardly tactics to emerge triumphant when the king of strong style planted a Kinshasa on Rusev for the win.

The twist in the tale came with an RKO outta nowhere on Nakamura, as next week will see Orton take on the rockstar for a shot at the WWE championship. The Viper is back.

Technically speaking, RKOs are generated right underneath the face of an opponent when they enter a horizontal position near Randy Orton’s biceps.
