2015 was not the best of years for animated films. Inside Out was very good and a money maker, but most of the animated movies failed to live up to hype with only Minions also really being a financial success. That’s largely because most of these films are all competing for the same market and with more strong players in the industry, you need to offer something different to attract a large audience.

Laika Animation (ParaNorman, BoxTrolls) have differentiated themselves form the rest of the animation studios with their unique brand of stop motion animation and CGI. And it has generally resulted in movies that are unique in their aesthetic, although their more serious approach to storytelling has made their moves somewhat more mature than what we are used to seeing from animation studios these days.

And, along with Focus Pictures they have now released the trailer for their next movie, Kubo And The Two Strings

They are certainly not ones to stick to convention and again have something completely different to offer. I love the setting of an adventure story that takes place in mythical ancient Japan. And that backing score for the trailer is great, with the Beatles’ While My Guitar Gently Weeps being brought into the mix. The atmosphere of the film looks fantastic, though it seems they are once again going with a strong dramatic element to the story.

The voice cast for the film is also looking to be top notch with Ralph Fiennes, Charlize Theron, Rooney Mara,  Matthew McConaughey and Brenda Vaccaro all lending their vocal talents to the film with Art Parkinson (Game of Thrones) playing the lead role of Kubo. It certainly seems like Laika are going all out for this one and I hope it’s something that can be as exciting as all that acting talent.

The premise for the film is as follows:

In the epic fantasy, scruffy, kindhearted Kubo ekes out a humble living while devotedly caring for his mother in their sleepy shoreside village. It is a quiet existence – until a spirit from the past catches up with him to enforce an age-old vendetta. Suddenly on the run from gods and monsters, Kubo’s chance for survival rests on finding the magical suit of armor once worn by his fallen father, the greatest samurai the world has ever known. Summoning courage, Kubo embarks on a thrilling odyssey as he faces his family’s history, navigates the elements, and bravely fights for the earth and the stars.

The film’s script has been written by Marc Haimes and Chris Butler (ParaNorman) and will be directed by Travis Knight, who is making his directorial debut. The film is currently set for an August 19, 2016 release. Along with the trailer they have also provided some promotional posters for the movie.

I’ve been a huge fan of Laika’s previous work, so this is definitely on my must-see list for the year.
