You have no choice in this trailer for BEAUTIFUL CREATURES

Looks like we’re getting a twofer this week when it comes to teenaged girls with crazy superpowers. Yesterday, we got our first glimpse of Chloe Moretz as the telekinetic Carrie, and now we meet Alice Englert as the magical and mysterious Lena, in an adaptation of the YA bestseller, Beautiful Creatures.

Instead of pig’s blood and social anxiety though, Lena is covered head to toe in cliched schoolgirl romanticisms. Luckily though, she also has the talents of Jeremy Irons, Emma Thompson and Viola Davis backing her up.

A supernatural love story set in the South, “Beautiful Creatures” tells the tale of two star-crossed lovers: Ethan (Alden Ehrenreich), a young man longing to escape his small town, and Lena (Alice Englert), a mysterious new girl. Together, they uncover dark secrets about their respective families, their history and their town.

Studios are all frantically searching for the next Twilight, with any book with “YA” in the genre being snapped up like Darryn in a pie shop. Now this Southern tale of supernatural love is also throwing its hat into the ring, and thus far, despite the soppy teenage love premise (I’ve never read the books, so the final love story may be more cliche free than what is being displayed in the trailer), I’m intrigued by some of the talent attached to it. I already mentioned Irons, Thompson and Davis, but there’s one more heavyweight in the form of writer/director Richard LaGravenese, who may have done his fair share of crowd pleasing love stories in his time, but who also wrote the screenplays for The Fisher King, The Bridges of Madison County, The Horse Whisperer and Freedom Writers, the last of which he also directed.

It will be out the day before Valentines Day, so men gird yourself, as this topic may just come up. Let’s hope that LaGravenese keeps the soppiness nausea levels decent, in which case I might actually not kick and scream too much as I’m dragged to see it.
