If you’re a homophobic comic book purist, then you must really hate Ang Lee. But irrespective of what you may feel about Hulk’s daddy issues, or Brokeback Mountain‘s cowboy love, you can’t deny that the Oscar winning Taiwanese director makes some gorgeous looking films. From sweeping romanticized shots in Sense and Sensibility, the foreboding of Japanese occupied Shangai in Lust, Caution and the sheer poetry in motion of Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon, Lee knows how to make love to eyeballs.

Well you need to light some candles and put on some Barry White, because it looks like our peepers are in for an orgasmic experience in Life of Pi.

Director Ang Lee (Brokeback Mountain, Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon) creates a groundbreaking movie event about a young man who survives a tragic disaster at sea and is hurtled into an epic journey of adventure and discovery. While marooned on a lifeboat, he forms an amazing and unexpected connection with the ship’s only other survivor — a fearsome Bengal tiger.

The digital filming techniques that Lee used for this visual tour de force may put off some with it’s hyper-realism, but I feel that as since this is essential a story being told, this overexposed fantastical look suits the subject matter quite well. And apparently a whole lot of my film peers agree.

The film opened the New York Film Festival at the end of last week to rave reviews all around. The words “Awards” and “lots of” are already being thrown around, with a smattering of “Holy crud, Lee, you’ve done it again”.
