Comic Book Men (1)

Welcome to another week of You Should Be Watching, true believers! This time, we’re stepping into the not so hallowed halls of reality TV, and we’re not even using an infinity gem to do so. Wading through all that wasteful muck of hellish housewives from insert county here to bring you some real life fun done in the mighty Marvel and Dynamic DC fashion known as Comic Book Men. Excelsior!

You think about comic book fans on TV, and the usual guilty party that comes to mind is that mother-f***ing TV series The Big Bang Theory. I hate that show. I hate it with the passion of a million exploding suns and dammit I’m getting carried away again. So what’s it like in the world of comic books, where a bunch of guys run a shop and deal in that printed media and its various kung-fu grip accessories? Not that dissimilair from any other job really.

Starring the gang from director Kevin Smith’s Secret Stash comic book shop, Comic Book Men feels like a geekier side of Pawn Stars. What elevates the show however, is that it crosses over with Smith’s Smodcast network, as the gang and the big man himself talk shop and the industry as a whole in a studio space, before cutting back to the “reality” side of things. And that’s where the show shines. It’s not a put-on display for TV, but everything the guys say feel genuine and from the heart.

There’s always going to be a massive element of fiction to any reality show, but at least with Comic Book Men the banter and jibes feel good-hearted, entertaining and done with enthusiasm. That’s what makes this show really stand out, while seeing store boss Walt Flanagan haggle to the last dime over the price of a comic never gets old.

Comic Book Men is a great introduction for newcomers to comics, and a sign of appreciation to anyone who has been collecting for a while now.

I don’t hate it, but I do prefer it doesn’t exist. That weird character is little more than a cocky Niles Crane.

I don’t get the hate for BBT. Either you like a show or don’t, but why hate and despise something so much. Change the channel and don’t stream/download it.

BBT haters are just people who take the theme too seriously.
its a light hearted comedy and should be treated as so.
the whole “BBT makes nerds look stupid” thing is old.

and sometimes its jokes are remarkably accurate
