Yes, you read that right. The home of LOL-Cats, angsty teenage vid-blogs and foot fetish videos has started its own film festival, and is open for submissions, provided that they meet certain guidelines of course.

The grand prize? A whopping $500 000 grant that will enable the winner to produce an original piece of work for Scott Free Productions.Submissions must be around 15 minutes long, and can be thrown into the ring from February 2nd. Filmakers Ridley and Tony Scott will judge the entries, and pick the top 50 out of them, moving them to an exclusive YouTube channel by the name of Your Film, allowing for users to narrow the field down to ten.

From there, the finalists will be flown to the Venice Film Festival to screen their shorts in front of a panel of judges that includes Ridley Scott. “Through this program, YouTube will give filmmakers the opportunity to reach a vast audience, screen their work during the Venice Film Festival and potentially be rewarded in a career-changing way,” Robert Kyncl, global head of content at YouTube, said in a statement to the Associated Press.

YouTube will also have a presence at the Sundance and South by Southwest Film Festivals this year in order to drum up interest in filmmakers who would want to participate in their festival.
