Is the PS4 really worth picking up on day one?

Obviously since we are all gamer nuts here the idea that we won’t be lining up to get our PlayStation 4 on release date may seem a little bizarre. But I was having a chat yesterday with our old friend Nick who was asking if it was even worth pre-ordering the PlayStation 4 or rather waiting until the real titles are released.

So let’s investigate what are the confirmed day one launch titles for the PlayStation 4 and whether they are enough to make us rush out and lay down some hard earned cash.

Assassin’s Creed IV: Black Flag

Incredible looking title but it will also be releasing on the PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 beforehand. But this one isn’t multiplayer centric so it may be worth holding out for a hopeful improvement in graphics

Battlefield 4 and Call of Duty: Ghosts

COD-Ghosts-vs.-Battlefield-4-by-visual-detail

Two seriously multiplayer centric games that would likely be more enjoyable on the PS3 or Xbox 360 as you know all your friends will still be there.

FIFA 14,  Madden NFL 25, NBA 2K14, NBA Live 14

These ones depend if you are a single player or multiplayer player but really sports titles have never been a console driver. Should exist in a bundle though.

Killzone Shadow Fall

KillzoneShadowFall

This is one of the PS4 exclusives that may sway you if you were a fan of the previous titles. Personally they never really got me excited so I can wait before trying this one

Knack

Knack had some hype going into E3 but so far the previews have been less than stellar so once again not a console pusher.

LEGO Marvel Super Heroes, Just Dance 2014, Skylanders: Swap Force

Unless your parents are loaded don’t be surprised if you end up with the PS3 versions of these.

DC Universe Online

So far the previews have once again been less than stellar and this exists on other platforms already

Warframe

warframe

Released on PC in March, so yeah not a driver of sales.

DriveClub

A decent looking arcade racer from the brains behind Motorstorm. It’s set to go head to head with GRiD 2 which you can own already

Watch Dogs

There are huge expectations for Watch Dogs with Ubisoft putting a lot of their future plans into this massive open world title. I for one absolutely cannot wait for this game to come out but it is releasing on PS3 and Xbox 360 as well so I’d rather go with the version I know will be solid.

And there we have it 16 launch titles and not a single one that is making me rush out to place my pre-order. Granted moving forward the titles are looking amazing but unless more big names are announced it may be a good idea to wait for the second wave on consoles to hit and pick one up in post Christmas sales.

What do you think, has anything on this list made you think you just have to place that pre-order?

Nothing yet. The Order looks intriguing though. And if Demon’s Souls 2 is announced at Gamescom, that may change my mind!

What about Metal Gear Solid 5? (I know it is also a current gen game.)

Valid point as every new Gen has a minor flurry of new titles on release and then the grind sets in waiting for months for a decent game, any decent game…

Not just that. But we all know there are going to be service issues. Firmware that needs to be patched, log ins not working, etc etc. These things are going to be happening on both consoles because the industry has proven time and again that these devices and services are never properly stress tested and the faults never picked up.

So until it’s all stable… No way no how.

Haha, good point… Lucky for us BF4 is available at launch. BF3 kept me playing for over a year so I’m not too worried + I’ll be on my PS3 for a month or 5 next year when Dark Souls 2 comes out 🙂 Hopefully by then Destiny will launch!

I’m on your page bud. Will wait for the bugs to be ironed out. Besides, pre PS 4 launch we still have GTA V, GT 6, Diablo III and B4, so there be enough games to keep the PS3 busy and as Gavin mentioned, all my mates will be on PS3. I am also waiting for confirmation from Sony regarding all of the PSN purchases I have made over the years. What happens to all them games?

As things currently stand R15.10 to the pound, plus extra for shipping etc PS4 will R5699 to R5999

The PS4 is being questioned here. I would rather get a PS3 and enjoy the TLOU and Beyond 2 souls while the PS4 library builds up. The Xbox One at least has Forza 5 that will keep me as a racing nut happy. Killer Instinct seems meh. Not a must have. Now if Ryse and Quantuam Break were launch titles…

Buying any console day 1 is pretty much asking for heartache because none of the faults that weren’t picked up have been fixed yet.

The X360 was my console of choice during the current gen but I had to eventually purchase a PS3 when Demon’s Souls was released as an exclusive on it. $ony have had some stunning exclusives on current gen (which no-one can reasonably argue against) and I don’t see them stopping for the PS4.

I bought my PS3 a month ago, purely because the price plummeted in anticipation of the PS4, and so I could pick up all the great exclusives, either as platinum releases, or from the BT Games bargain bin. I’ve pre-ordered the PS4, but I’m seriously reconsidering that decision tbh, but we’ll see I guess…..

Will pick up battlefield 4 if Im feeling like throwing some money around, otherwise nah.
I do hope there are a few more releases announced before launch date, I would like to see an rpg especially.
As things stand now I havent pre ordered it and might not unless I see a superb rpg for launch date, doesnt mean I wont buy it if i happen to walk into a shop on day after the launch and its there 🙂

While I am currently leaning towards a PS4, there is also talk of PC gaming component prices coming down to compete with the next gen of consoles. If that is the case I might even stay a PC gamer.

I was going to pre-order a PS4, but most of the games I’m looking forward to are actually current gen exclusive. It would have been a done deal if Beyond:Two Souls and GTA5 were going to be on the new consoles.

So, I’d rather wait till next year when both consoles have hit SA and i can see which one i like more. PS4 seems to be the obvious choice, but in this generation I definitely preferred the XBOX despite the better exclusives on PS3. Main reason, the controller.

Don’t these people know that all the games listed above would look better, run faster, and play smoother if the platform has MOAR POWAH!?!? BF3 struggled a bit on bigger maps on the PS3. I don’t want to think of what’s going to happen if BF4 is released. I honestly believe that you will get a much better experience on the PS4. Nuff said.

I reckon I’ll wait something like two to three years, if I can manage that. Bigger, cheaper game library = WIN. All I need to tide me over is a PC that can run Rome II.

    I’ll Keep my Day one PS4 pre-order.

I’m very keen on Killzone Shadowfall, so I’ll want the PS4 for that, I’ll also be picking up Destiny upon it’s release and then I’ll take Titanfall on PC, if I get bored I’ll pick up watchdogs on the PS4 too.

The article did make me uncertain though, I’m now scared the Day One PS4 will have some early adopter glitch, but then I also know if I don’t pre-order I’ll be waiting many moons for the next wave to hit SA.

PS4 will not even be a year one purchase. Let all the corporates first show their hands and let the beta testers get their hands on the consoles first and then I’ll decide if I will try my hand at next-gen.

I’m with you on that one.

Besides I still have a huge games backlog to catch up on and would rather by myself a bean to cup espresso machine for christmus.

I was on that silly choo choo, and I have just realised its easier to let the first gen of the console pass first. It might be “old hat” heardware, but its configured differently and who knows how/if they will break, whether software or hardware. Dropping anywhere in the region of 6k+ for either console is a pretty big gamble. The lack of stellar launch titles is a bit worrysome for early adopters, and I agree getting the MP centric gamers on board is pretty moot.

Ill let it hold out a bit, maybe for a year or so. Then most of the foul ups with hardware/firmware/software should be sorted by then and the PS boys should be able to fiddle with Gaikai in a little more detail. Theres no reward for lack of patience this time round IMO

Will enjoy ‘next gen’ on the PC for now and perhaps consider a PS4 slim edition when they eventually get released…

How everyone’s opinions on the PS4 has changed with this article (except for Bananananana Man). At this rate, it’s going to be a multiplat machine. We’ve seen Sony desert their crowd with no exclusives last year and I’m expecting more of the same from the next-gen. The sad truth is that Sony has no money to keep dishing out exclusives anymore. You are better off with a PS3 than a PS4 for the next 2-3 years.

I’ve never looked forward to a console coming out as much as this. I’ve had a few Nintendos in the early days, 8bit computers & modern day pcs. I love the direction they’ve gone with for PS4 & just concentrated on what matters whilst still connecting everyone. It’s become the purists choice who prioritise the gaming aspects. BF4 with the Dualshock 4 & 64 players.. When that’s out I’ll be playing it on PS4 day one – I can promise you that much! Can’t wait to see what the xclusives are like down the line. Naughty Dog’s ‘Last of Us’ was the best single player game of this generation hands down. GTA5 should be fantastic too right enough. Great time to be a gamer. Arguably the best in fact.

Yes i will be getting the ps4 on day one. BF4 will be better on next gen more players in game. Kill zone looks killer and so dose Destiny. Here how I see it, whats the difference if i get it now or latter it will still cost the same and it will be hard to find for some time after the launch.
